Re: Any Ishy Bloggers out there?

Bit late onto this thread as I have just rejoined the fold after a while away (and very glad to be back!) I have my own blog at http://thethriftysquirrels.co.uk/ where I am "Opting out of the throw-away society - making and growing more, buying and wasting less"! Would love to see o...

 Hi Rachel
that sounds a very tactful strategy - I'll give it a go and see what happens

Re: Hello again! - It's been a while...

if we don't pay then our neighbour will just take over - he has been to see the Brewery and claims he is using it for charity work when in fact at best a few people sit around drinking tea for an hour a week! What little they have been growing is just left to rot - so sad especially all of the fruit...

Re: Bramble Jelly

It's a great stand-by to have in the larder! I will be making a nice Bakewell tart type of thing soon with some of the bramble jelly :D

Bramble Jelly

I have spent the last couple of days making Bramble Jelly! Had more blackberries in my big chest freezer than I realised so, as I desperately needed the room I though it was the best course of action! Once defrosted I had 7 lbs of fruit but no lemons in the house to help with the set ( I was told th...

Re: Hello again! - It's been a while...

the brewery that owns the land has no rules and doesn't want to get involved really - and I can't blame them...it's the responsibility of the finance director and as he is only charging us £7.80 a year it's not top of his priority list!!! Once we get back on the land I am hopeful our neighbour will ...

Re: Hello again! - It's been a while...

Hi Glyn, as a fellow carer you can understand why the allotment had to take a back seat for a while!! I am still a carer for my mum, although she still has a small degree of independence, so getting back to digging and weeding will be therapy for me! The chap who is on the allotment actually has at ...

Hello again! - It's been a while...

After a pretty rubbish year, things are starting to look a bit brighter on the allotment front. A few years ago we allowed a neighbour to use our allotment - we were finding it hard to cope as we were looking after my husband's father, who had dementia. The understanding was that he would keep it go...

Re: Winter Warmer Cake!

That's the trouble with these old fashioned cakes isn't it...the nicer it tastes, the worse it is for you  My husband had high cholesterol (5.1) a couple of years ago and was told he would have to take tablets for it as he is also diabetic. He hates any tablets so made a real effort to bring ...

Re: Winter Warmer Cake!

I was looking for more info about these cakes yesterday and it seems that the Glocestershire 'Dripper' may be slightly different, made with dripping rather than lard (I will stick with solid vegetable fat!) and the Dripper did have a toffee bottom, one of its plus points! Maybe different areas had s...

Winter Warmer Cake!

Its been a flippin' cold day here with snow and freezing, blustery wind so I thought its a perfect day for a rib-sticking Lardy Cake! http://thethriftysquirrels.co.uk/pictures/lardy-cake-slice.jpg When I was growing up in Gloucestershire these were a real treat but we called them 'Drippers' ! Donna ...

Re: Bonjour from France

thanks David! I can thoroughly recommend the madeleine tray we have (the one you see on the blog), the little cakes came out so easily and they browned well too - not always guaranteed with a lightweight tin! Not sure what happened with the 'like' button - probably a Wordpress issue (I've had a few ...
