A Scottish Foraging Odyssey Week 3 (Brooklime)
Hi there, Short and sweet again due to just being too Gawd damn busy all the time. Brooklime (there I said it). Known to its Latin friends as Veronica beccabunga (that really is its name)! I found this on the hills near to me by the side of a pond, in a farmers field. Leaves first..... http://images...

A Scottish Foraging Odyssey Week 2 (Yew)
Hi All, A short, sweet post that is a day later than planned. I blame a busy life! Lets make one thing absolutely clear! Yew will kill you!!! It literally stops your heart and it is goodnight forever! However there is one edible part! The part you can eat is the fleshy red aril that surrounds the se...

Re: A Scottish Foraging Odyssey Week 1 (A Trio of Fungi)
Zech - I'm glad you brought them home and did loads more research. Wise move! Eating with gusto on your first sitting though is unwise! Let me relay a story..... In 2004 when that years edition of the Encyclopedia of Fungi was launched, 60 journalists were invited for lunch at the launch. Laetiporus...

Re: Turkish Hazel
I've never eaten Turkish Hazelnuts before, but they are probably similar to our own variety in that they taste better roasted.
The beauty of roasting is twofold.
a) It makes the shell brittle so easier to crack.
b) It imparts flavour.
Hope this helps.

Re: Should you remove parasitic Fungi
Hi 1984jay, Without fungi we would be well over head height in plant matter that simply would not decompose without fungis help. If a parasitic fungi is in the wild then I suggest it should be left, as this is simply nature taking its course. Unless of course it is edible! If it is taking hold in yo...

Re: Tree fungus ID help needed (updated photo)
All I can say re removing bracket fungus is this. If you have a recipe for Ganoderma then please be certain you are picking the correct species. A mistake may not be pleasant! I pick chicken of the woods, young birch polypore, beefsteak fungus and dryads saddle. I eat the lot. Do I worry about the t...

Re: Tree fungus ID help needed (updated photo)
Hi there, Zech was certainly right with this being a polypore. 1984jay you have definitely identified the genus correctly as Ganoderma. As for the precise Ganoderma I would guess at two possibilities that are common on Beech in the UK. We are perhaps looking at Ganoderma applanatum also known as the...

A Scottish Foraging Odyssey Week 1 (A Trio of Fungi)
Hi All, I'm very new here so I hope folks don't mind me jumping in feet first and making a contribution. My passions are many and varied, but the thing I love to do the most is forage wild foods. I consider myself an amateur forager only so please dont take my ID's and advice as gospel. Please resea...

Re: We will try to ID your mushrooms here
Excellent post and Aquilegia. The beauty of course is that a dot of latex on the tongue from a Fenugreek Milkcap will not bring on poisoning. It will taste so acrid that you sensibly wouldn't want to eat it though. It is however dried and used as a spice, and some brave folks do cook and eat it. BUT...

Re: We will try to ID your mushrooms here
Hi Zech and other shroomers, Great photos Zech by the way. Russulas and Milkcaps are fine to taste in the field just as your good self has. In fact this is the best way to know if you want to take them home for the pot or not. With Milkcaps just brush them underneath until they lactate and sample a ...

Re: We will try to ID your mushrooms here
Hi Sally, I can see you are super keen like me to learn as many fungi as possible. Loads of photos! At this time of year there are plenty of good edibles to seek out. I'll just put a wee list of the edibles on offer up here in Bonnie Scotland at the moment near me. Chanterelles, False Chanterelles, ...
