Re: This board ain't self sufficient

with 6 traps out for nearly 1 week I am now down to only a couple of earwigs per trap per night (still plenty outside the beds though) Plain olive oil seems to work best but I notice using a little cider vinegar as well attracts a few beetles. Pouring rain today so I expect the slugs to be out in fo...

Re: The Fashion for frugal blogs

Some years ago I read an article about frugal fashion - the author promoted having a limited wardrobe but of high quality and classic style that could be used in many situations. Perhaps this is another approach to frugality (but not self sufficiency) in clothing? I (male - perhaps its simpler) have...

Re: This board ain't self sufficient

I have also heard that Stale Beer is good for catching slugs & snails - forgive my antipodean ignorance, but what is Stale Beer? - I know of Malt Beer, Wheat Beer, Horehound Beer etc. but never one made from Stales.

Re: This board ain't self sufficient

I have discovered they are partial to olive oil - a little in the bottom of a small plastic tub set at ground level works well

Re: Roses from cuttings

I have grown roses from cutting many times in the past - my expert advice came from my sister who grew and bred roses as a hobby. Roses from cuttings should grow true to type IF the cutting was taken from the cultivar wood and not the stock wood or a root cutting. - sometimes the stock will send up ...

Re: This board ain't self sufficient

Ok - so I couldn't help myself. The veg patch is up and running again, at least a small part of it for this year. The problem began when I encountered a small bag of sprouting potatoes in the cupboard.. Some are now in beds and others in an old washing machine tub which will be progressively filled ...

Re: Improving being self sufficientish

A while ago I was at a social event (end of financial year) put on by a couple of accounting firms. I fell into discussion with two young up and comers re protection of the environment etc. ( the "what do you do?" thingy) It seems that these two subscribe to an apparently growing philosoph...

Re: This board ain't self sufficient

Flo The "work" is something I do because I like the bank manager to call me by my first name rather than Mr. It is also allowing me to (hopefully) reach a point of semi independence on my block - that is that it returns enough in needs and excess so as to not require the external inputs an...

Re: It's that time of year again ...

Ok, so now I am confused. Odsox is planting toms at the same time as we in Oz will be? Our rule is plant Toms on Melbourne Cup day to have the first ripe by Christmas - but we in the semi-arid zone will be planting a little earlier.

Re: This board ain't self sufficient

Perhaps others, like me, are just stunned into open mouthed silence by the achievements of the Ish leaders? For me it has just been a (expletive deleted) year where I have not been able to get anything really done - just work 10 - 12 hours a day 7 days a week; my transition to retirement plan seems ...

Re: Improving being self sufficientish

GA - 2500km varies in length depending on the route - we will be taking the "scenic" coast rout most of the way so it will take us about 5 days - with refreshment stops. The two boys took the inland route a couple of years ago in an ancient hilux - took them 2 days driving virtually non-st...

Re: Smartflower?

I agree with Odsox - looks a bit flimsy for real weather but I can see a use for it as a more portable arrangement.
Sun tracking installations are not uncommon here, particularly in the remote west - however these are quite robust fixed systems.

Re: Improving being self sufficientish

His mother is in child withdrawal at the moment (he is only 32 after all) We will have him back for 2 days then he and I will drive (his ute) back to Mount Isa (2,500km) where he works - I will fly back. Unfortunately we will be forced to make several stops along the way to investigate the local mar...
