Re: Rebel

Just been pushed into buying my first smartphone - it will be in the river soon if I cant get it to work. No reception whatsoever on the block, battery life zero because the B*******y thing is constantly on; way too big to fit into a pocket and I can't get a kit to fit it into the tractor or quaddy.

Re: White Vinegar

Vinegar as a weed killer? put enough on for long enough and it will work. If you dump enough of anything on a plant for long enough you will kill it, either through toxic action or changing its environmental conditions - the younger the plant the more susceptible it will be. The real question is whe...

Re: The new banish plastic movements

So what actually drives recycling? Certainly not any concern about the environment around here. Plastics are slowly being removed from what can be put into our recycling. Firstly plastic films including the heavier flexible types, bubble wrap etc; reason - they get caught in the sorting machinery; n...

Re: Ckook adventure

Oh dear - spoke to the chick (rooster)provider yesterday. I seems that the little grandaughter was adamant in choosing only the prettiest ones as a present for Grandpa. Guess I now have a bachelor flock as well.

Ckook adventure

Hi This year I decided to get some more chooks - I haven't kept any for years. My 5 year old grandaughter offered (via her mother) to get me 4 from a maternal Aunt as a christmas present. Six week old birds, sexed as females, duly arrived and were comfortably housed and fed. No eggs arrived in the e...

Re: It's that time of year again ...

For me, it is time to pull out the tomatoes, capsicums etc.; the last of the fruit is ready and anything that attemps to come from now will not finish. I got 4 plants from a friend who saves his seed every year. they produced late fruit, good size and flavour but did not keep more than a couple of d...

Re: Can certain plants prevent fruit tree problems if put under the trees

My experience and reading tells me that these plantings don't really work in trees - I have never seen an orchardist - organic or otherwise - use them. Plant products like garlic can be made into sprays that deter bugs etc.

Re: Has Spring sprung?

Looks the same here - except an early Autumn. Daily temps are not rising above low 30's C and then falling down to 10-14 C at night. Normallly Feb / March would be our hottest months with daily temps into the high 30's / low 40's and night temps around mid 20's. The few deciduous trees I have are st...

Re: Dig the Fig - The essential guide to all you need to know about figs - Ficus carica

This particular species (little red) is relatively widespread in Eastern Oz from top to bottom but I have never seen them around here before. Our season in the East has been very dry so they may be wandering looking for food - they are mainly flower feeders but take fruit when available. A larger sp...

Re: Dig the Fig - The essential guide to all you need to know about figs - Ficus carica

The fig season is over in a hurry; the bats stripped both trees overnight. How did they find the trees? I have never seen a fruit bat within 50 Km of here and the nearest other fruit trees are at least 3 Km away, there is no native food source available anywhere near, no fruit or veg crops, nothing ...

Re: Banish Plastic

Perhaps we are quacking up the wrong shrub? Has anyone (with apologies to the Veg's and Vegans) looked at animal products as alternative packaging? Our ancestors wrapped harvest etc. in animal membranes (and veg containers) of many types and cached them - often in permafrost. Just putting it out there
