Re: Where are you now?

I almost did. I guess creeping age is making me soft. It took a couple of litres of electrolyte soup over the afternoon to catch up. These are not really extreme temps for us as plus 40's happen in summer. My workday world is doing quite a bit of work on climate change modelling and the potential fo...

Re: Where are you now?

The last few days our afternoons have been spent indoors - temps have been around mid 40'sC so nothing much can be done outside after about 2.00pm. 44 on Saturday, measured under the verandah on the shady side, and 46 Sunday. Friday I abandoned the tractor when it reached 52 in the cab. Everything s...

Re: The new banish plastic movements

DND - my understanding is that these are oxo-degradable and the main trigger is sunlight as produce may need to be stored for some time. Perversely, a few products come in the degradable bags but with a moisture proof, non-degradable liner! I have shifted to FIBC's (bulk bags) where possible but the...

Re: The new banish plastic movements

I wonder what has happened (or is happening) with the various types of degradable packaging that have been popping up from time to time? These days a lot of my farm consumables, seed, fertilisers etc. are in solar degradable packages - they last about 2 weeks in the sun - others are now in returnabl...

Re: Storm Dylan?

Whoa! I didn't mean to start an argument (but it is interesting) I asked myself the question while in the tractor in the middle of the storm (I opted for staying in it but moving to the most open area available) These storms are becoming much more common around here. Odsox - you are welcome to sit i...

Re: Storm Dylan?

Not a major storm but another of those short, intense summer storms we seem to be getting throughout summer these days - lasted about 10 minutes with lots of wind, lightining and about 6mm of rain. The storm did raise a question though; when caught out in a paddock (feeding cattle) and having lightn...

Re: Laptop batteries

Not helpful for you but most computer shops here will take the old battery when you purcahse a new one - as well as the old computer, printer, printer cartridges etc. There is also a National Computer and TV recycling scheme operating through charity organisations (usually providing employment for d...

Re: No Bees?

I think around my patch the limiting factors (other than surface water) would include ongoing removal of trees, particularly the old reds and yellows with the hive hollows, and the increasing number of neighbours now growing lucerne and clovers for hay commercially.

Re: New potatoes for dinner

For the first time in many years even my pitiful efforts in the veg garden are gracing the table. (previously single income, house load of kids, schools, etc. etc. dictated growing as much food as possible but this dropped off as work dominated) I am still coming to terms with our climate and what c...

Re: Being self sufficient in 2017

or deciding not to do the things that do not give a return (like mowing lawns and keeping toy animals) ? I tend to over plan in the context of program logic - Decide the end state, determine the starting point (foundation) - determine the intermediate outcomes (steps) - work out resources needed - g...

Re: Compost worms

I will take what improvement I can get so will try this; I really need to get the soil condition up and improve the bioactivity. Result is to get a better use and cycling of natural and applied nutrients, better root penetration and better water holding capacity. Out of this there should also be a m...

Re: Compost worms

Worms on a larger scale? I have just bought some processed worm castings; 2000kg of them. The material is worm casting, added micronutrients and added microorganisms. Some may recall my previous posts regarding the degraded state of my soils, the virtual non-existence of organic matter and lack of m...

Re: No Bees?

MKG - this will probably be the process for the pumpkins and melons but I think, given the current heat wave (forecast 43 c / 109F )today, the toms and capsicums will be abandoned to their fate (other than water). Any ideas for the 4 bulls that seem content to just lay around in the shade and ignore...
