Re: Solar panels

Common in Oz to have vans, caravans etc. hooked up to solar recharge systems (in fact it is now uncommon to NOT have it). These normally power a small 'fridge, water pumps, lighting, computer, entertainment etc. However, normal car batteries are simply not good enough even for these usages as they d...

Re: Chickens

Thanks, I will keep investigating. I was given these birds third hand - apparently they came from a breeder near Urana a couple of hours West of here (Google it) so no history for them. Re Chooks pooing so much - the quick answer is that they have a very simple and rapid digestive system that result...

Re: Pet gripes

Poorly manufactured clothes I still buy most of my clothes (no skill in this arena) but they are utilitarian in the most part and my wardrobe is minimalist. (However, I have always been a bit of a stickler for classic cut, fit and fabric) Recently bought a pack of 6 pairs of heavy cotton work socks ...

Re: Not Self Sufficient

I agree, we have lost contact with our environment and how to live within it and the authorities allow inappropriate "developments" and continually allow downgrading of building standards resulting in more damage. In Oz the standard house construction is lightweight pine (pre-fabricated) h...

Re: Hot weather and water

With the removal of our old veg patch pending total re-construction (just way too many inherited soil & pest problems to manage effectively) I have finally built two outdoor wicking beds to test. I followed a design from the Gardening Australia for no other reason than I needed to pick one from ...

Re: DIY Energy

Re: What are you harvesting now?

Yes, that is one of the reasons we decided to go for the whole rebuild thing. We will get some mechanical assistance once all the old "infrastructure" has been removed.

Re: What are you harvesting now?

nothing - in the process of pulling the whole veg patch out, levelling everything and starting again. We are running into too many issues with fertility, water infiltration, soil borne diseases etc. in various beds.

Re: Growing in 2021

we get the same, rainfall now depends on being lucky (or unlucky) enough to be under the cloud at the time. so, the dams did as expected and overflowed - our entrance road is under 2 metres of water and we are commuting by boat (1 ute on each side) and the bottom lands are under flowing water. Howev...

Re: Growing in 2021

I don't think there is any more water around, just that the rain patterns are becoming more severe. Also, with deforestation, chemical farming and loss of soil structure from cultivation the rain is not being absorbed into the earth "sponge" and slowly released later. I read somewhere rece...

Re: To all those junk collectors

one of the issues for us is the cost and time involved in getting rid of bulky junk - we don't have a rubbish collection service of any kind so we must take it to the facility (30 mins away) and then pay to dump it. We can get rid of household type stuff locally (again we pay each time) but not anyt...

still very little growth here; now cold and continually wet; rivers and dams are at max so we expect to be flooded out in the next few weeks.

Re: Self Sufficient 2021

how can they afford it? Simple, they are no longer spending on dining out, international travel and entertainment. Not only are the boats and campers in vogue but house renovations have gone ballistic here - hundreds of thousands of dollars per reno around where I live - at least eight major renos i...
