Re: Insence as a form of air freshener

To be honest, I would be wanting to know what's making my dogs smell rather than trying to cover up their odour. No offense intended, but we have had 2-4 dogs of various breeds and mixes living in the house for the last 20 years, and the house doesn't smell doggy unless they come in soaking wet. We ...

Re: Home made skin toner

I collect rainwater and then heat it to steaming, add a big handful of calendula petals to about 1 litre of the rainwater while it's still steaming. Let sit till the water is cool, and strain out the petals. Add to pump spray bottle a few drops each of rose hip oil, lavender oil and tea tree oil and...

Re: I need some urgentish chicken help!!!!

I quite agree. In my experience, when mum is done, she's done. The babies should be fine on their own now, but I would definitely keep them caged while you're away. It's hedgehog season, and half-grown chickens make quite a feast for them when they can get ahold of them, which was far too often for ...

Re: poultry advice needed!

When chooks are penned, they will shred just about every living thing, simply out of boredom. They also love the new spring growth on most plants, even if they become unplatable as they mature. Even if they don't eat/damage the plants, they will most certainly eat ALL the berries, even before they a...

Re: Baby Chick questions

Hello -- I have been rearing chooks for over 20 years, so have seen a lot of chickens! We leave mum and chickens locked up for 4-6 weeks together, thought because your hen has started laying again so soon, watch her, as she may become bored with the chickens and start to peck them. Having ...

Do you think this would work using rice flour?

Re: Rabbits in cages or can it be another way?

One thing we have found over the last few years of keeping rabbits for meat is that does get along together fine as long as they are reared together and used to each other, but an introduced doe is going to get the c**p knocked out of her, and it never ends well. I have brother bucks who've lived to...

Re: Are men more attached to watching television than women are?

My husband would probably never watch TV if it weren't for me and my daughter watching it as often as we do. My son (16.5) hardly watches it either, but will ocassionally join us if we're watching something he finds interesting.

Re: Cabbages

Bubble and Squeak is a serious favourite here, prepped as mentioned above (not mash but little cubes of potato). Also coleslaw in summertime is a nice salad. Equal parts thinly slices cabbage and grated carrot, dressing of mayonnaise (the no-sugar added kind! I hate mayo and salad creams with sugar ...

Of nettle beer and elderflower cordial...

Going to try some nettle beer this weekend, but would like to use honey instead of sugar. Has anyone tried this, and what would the substitution be? I'm assuming that one would have to boil the honey so as not to contaminate the brew? I'd also like to try the same with elderflower cordial, which I'v...

Re: Wartime cheese pudding

Made this for breakfast for the children yesterday, and they scoffed it down and wanted seconds! I used homemade chevre instead of a grate-able cheese and bread which had lots of seeds in. It was delicious, and will become a staple around here. Thank you! Simply brilliant, brilliantly simple. Cheers...

Re: pig advice

Part of how the pigs will be kept is dependent on breed type, but they ALL need shelter in the form of some kind of shed, to get in out of the weather when necessary. Even with all the fat they can carry around, they get chilled easily, and then you end up feeding them mountains of food just to keep...

Re: Would you ever burn nappies in a woodburner?

I would never burn plastic, no matter how small the amount. Burning plastic emits toxic fumes, dioxins, which eventually get into the surrounding environment, food sources and water sources. Dioxins are known carcinogens. It's legal to burn plastic in open fires here in New Zealand, and when the far...
