Re: growing potatoes

I’ve grown spuds in cardboard boxes. I did it when I took over a piece of overgrown land. I didn’t have time to clear the weeds so just popped the boxes on top. They did disintegrate but I just ended up with potatoes that were earthed up and the weeds smothered.

Re: Useful tips for starting on a self sufficientish path

I help out on a group for people with food allergies and intolerances. I was absolutely shocked at the number of members who refuse to cook for themselves and just complain about the lack of free-from options. I had a lodger once who didn’t cook. Every evening he would walk to the local takeaway and...

Re: Got the Signoff...

I managed to reduce my hours to three days last year. I’d asked for four but was told they wouldn’t be able to find anyone to pick up one day from me. If I did three days, then they could afford to employ someone else at three days in a job share. In the end, they had a reshuffle and didn’t take any...

Well the snow has given way to rain here but at least it’s not so cold. I don’t do cold well.

Re: Self Isolation

I am so grateful for everything I have at the moment, I feel like I must be the luckiest person alive. I’ve got my house and garden so I’m not stuck in a tiny flat with no outside space and a psychopath for a flat mate. Years of poor health have meant that my social life has been very limited so I d...

I seem to be self sufficient in cat fur! Both cats have been moulting continuously since early September.

Re: Today I Dug Up...

Wow, what a haul. I’ve dug up various things in various gardens, not all as useful, though. 500 glass bottles, various car engine parts, a shed (in bits), an aluminium greenhouse frame (no glass), a silver plated kilt pin (with no silver left 🙄), various body parts (plastic) and the most useful thin...

Re: Water, water everywhere...

I woke up one day last week, got myself ready for work, opened the curtains to.... snow!!! I was so shocked, I decided to work from home. Brrrr, not going out in that.

Re: I don't know how ....

I do think society is getting more and more diverse. I use technology at work and tend to spend quite a bit of time on the computer at home, too. I have a 5 yr old smart phone which I’m thinking of upgrading but I don’t use it all the time. I’m a TV fan, mainly crime or historic drama yet I cook fro...

Re: What are you growing right now?

Yippee, it’s rained and suddenly, everything’s started growing again. I’ve got courgettes, beans and onions ready with chick peas, carrots and tomatoes ripening. I’m a bit worried about my squashes, though. They were so held back by the dry weather, that they haven’t even flowered yet.

Re: Water butt - no down pipe

For my degree I designed this: https://thealveus.blogspot.com/2012/08/ ... water.html

Designed to collect water where there isn’t a suitable downpipe. I even made a prototype out of an old piece of land drain and an umbrella. Sadly it blew over in the rain.

Re: Tidying up with ...

My mum was so cross. She had a key to her friend’s house so she could have just gone in and sorted out what she could when she had time and it would have saved the family money. It cost them a fortune to have the house cleared.
