I was digging the rotted compost out of my heap a couple of months back and actually found some peat pots I'd peeled off and thrown in....Still sitting there, fully intact.
I've also found the intact remains of them in the soil, where I've planted beans grown in them.

Re: I'm a car! But not everybody's happy
I like this. Can't you just see the Citroen Double Nobby? The Ford Rusty? The General Motors Trev? Yes, I foresee a totally new poetic world   Mike Fiat did used to sell a car in South America called the "Rustica". For some reason, that name wasn't used in Europe. Personally, I'...

Re: Natures Harvest and tomatoes
I grew black cherry toms last year and they do give a very good flavour, if a slightly disappointing harvest (though that may be down to the position they were in). Also the plants themselves grew like mad and ended up taking up a lot of space, requiring constant cutting back and side shooting. I gr...

Re: Finding things
the ones I planted got eaten by voles I read that as "eaten by wolves" at first glance and imagined you have a thrillingly dangerous sounding garden. I found some random sunflowers growing, raspberries which seem to pop up all over the place along with strawberries which seem to se...

Re: Bottled Cider caution!
Ah, I seem to have a similar problem with my home brew. I tried opening one to sample the delights of my labours and had to spend about 1/2 hour mopping up afterwards. What was left did taste quite nice though, so at least I sort of got the recipie right! I maybe bottled them too early, before the y...

Re: How many Huckleberries?
I grew "Garden Huckleberries" last year, which are not the same as the American Huckleberries (but look similar) and I've never known a plant produce so much fruit. I got a couple of kg worth off four plants and didn't really pay too much attention to them, other than having to cut them ba...

Re: Strawberry-eating mice
See, I worry about poison because what is to stop a mouse getting out of the box and perhaps the greenhouse before dying and being eaten by a bird or someone's pet cat. I can't bare to think about my neigbours using poison for mice    If you use poison, they also crawl under the floo...

Re: Slow progress
My tomatoes are small too, though they seem to have picked up the pace a little over the last week or so.
Maybe it's just because I stopped checking them every half hour.

Re: Strawberries + Growbags
I made some simple trough / planters out of some salvaged decking, lined them with thick polythene and planted strawbs in those. They seem to work quite well, but you do need to keep them damp as they dry out quite quickly. They also now seem to sprout randomly out of the cracks in the patio, other ...

Re: Tomato Seedlings
I've had this happen to mine in the past, and I'm sure it was (as you suggest) down to me being a bit over enthusiastic with watering them.
They went onto recover and grow to full sized plants though!

Re: My soil is just really really CLAY!!!!
I've got heavy clay soil and leeks & lettuces worked very well. Only problem is that slugs & snails seem to be rife, which I think is because the clay soil stays damp for longer and is a better environment for them to thrive. I covered the lettuces up with cloches made from plastic bottles, ...

Re: What to do with tomatos?
You can make them into a tomato pasta type sauce and freeze it in batches.
There's a good recipie here on the Jamie Oliver website.
I tried pickling some tomatoes last year, but they didn't turn out very well.

I don't know, but the concept of mushrooms growing on mushrooms is a strangely beautiful one.
