I don't know about you Stoney but having lived on one council estate after another I find living in the countryside completely astounding. The sheer beauty of the place stuns me anew every day. I love everything about it here. The night times being really dark so the stars are more visible than I've...

Many animals will kill their offspring if there is something wrong with it. That doesn't mean they need their healthy offspring taken away from them for safety's sake. If you choose to raise them yourself that's fine but please don't give the girls a bad name. :pale: If your muscovey has killed heal...

Well that's good news.
Try seeing how long you can go without buying any shopping. I do it every month and can normally get another three days worth of meals.

It's funny isn't it? My husband used to be a slaughterman and he has no trouble seeing animals as potential food. He doesn't lose a wink of sleep when he dispatches surplus cockerels for the table and although he likes them very much when they are alive, sneaking treats out so he can hand feed them ...

Congratulations. Chickens are marvellous creatures to have around, a source of much facination and amusement. I've had chooks for two years now and I still love 'em. Be prepared for them to get right under your skin and leave footprints all over your heart.

I feel more guilty when I eat shop bought meat. It's never easy to kill anything and I had to do a lot of serious thinking before I could bring myself to eat home grown chicken. In the end I realised that taking responsibility for the lives of the food I ate may lead to a bit of suffering for me but...

These are all for the table, three for us and one for swapping for mutton and lamb. We chose them because we wanted an outdoor breed that was relatively docile and going to be fairly forgiving of minor newbie mistakes. That gave us about four breeds in the short list. The GOS breeder lives very clos...

There was a recipe posted on ACL about a year ago by Hotluca. I've made it about twenty times now and everybody loves it. It's serious comfort food.

My new arrivals.

Our first pigs. They are ten week old Gloucestershire Old Spots. We've already learned a lot although we've only had them for two weeks, the first thing being that they can get through really small gaps hidden in the nettle-covered fencing. The second thing we learned was that chasing piglets around...

Hi alexeix. You can buy all those things online if there are no stockists near you. The one I use myself is The soap kitchen online: http://www.thesoapkitchen.co.uk/ I have always had a good fast service from them and they don't charge the earth for postage. I had the same problems figuring out how ...

Aww what a shame. He was a great teacher who taught millions of people the value of life on this planet, from elephants through to frogs and insects. He made them all seem important, beautiful and fascinating to his students. The world will be a poorer place without him.

I leave the skins in the jam but you could skim them out as they fall off the flesh of the plums if you prefer.

Plum jam is my absolute favourite and I use my own recipe for it. I stone the plums before weighing them, put them in a heavy based pan and add 'some' water. That means not quite enough to cover the plums. Cook the plums til they are soft and the skins have all curled off them then add the same weig...
