It is strange that sometimes people go on about eating wild foods, then when you do, they are yucky. I have a lot of sorrel growing on the campus near me and tried a teeny bit, and it burnt my mouth . I have no idea why everyone goes on about it.

They are apparently very hard to grow. Luckily for me, I have 3 bushes near me that end up groaning with fruit - much more than I can use. Good thing too, as medlar wine is a favourite.

Yep. Don't ask me why though as it would have been easier leaving them in. I sometimes wonder if my brain is shrinking with age.

Woolworths are having a sale so I picked up a gooseberry bush and blackcurrant bush for £1.99 each. It will be interesting to see how they do. I also got a golden elder from Woolworths for £3 in March and it is already looking lovely. Beautiful colour on the leaves.

Am i right in thinking that the only problem with carrots and stones is that they don't come out of the ground that nice straight shape? Thanks for the reminder! I have been meaning to get some more wine started but have been sidetracked by the garden. I will start my own chai wine tonight and hopefully we will both have some yummy booze later in the year.

If you are willing to try something different, why not make country ales? I will be doing a honey beer this month, but you can make beer out of nettles too, which is a good use for those plants. And they are free!

It tasted like nettles with cheese :). Very distinctive flavour.

I picked the tops of the nettles - top 4 or 6 leaves. If you include the stalks then it will be gritty - leaves only.

Thought you may want to see how the sheeps cheese and nettle tart turned out.

I have noticed quite a good spread of membership on this site. Not many from the US though. Well, not posting lots anyway. I would love to go to New Zealand - climate much like ours but better scenery.

I read that throwing them into your compost bin is the best thing to do. They help break down the compost, and the heat in the bin kills the eggs. I think I may pop out a hedgehog box too though, as we don't seem to have many round here now. :( What about putting dried holly leaves or gorse branches...
