Thanks for the advice everybody. I'm going to move the bins to a sunnier spot and change the mix a bit to have more carbon (or less nitrogen). I've also got an air-flow problem so I might justr make some new bins anyway. I'll keep you posted on progress.

Cold climate composting

Hi all Sorry I haven't been around for a few weeks but I've been a bit unwell. In fact, I had to spend a couple of days in hospital (don't ask, but it was painful :() and then just as I was recovering I got hit with mega-flu over easter. Natyrally, now that I've recovered it's back to work. Such is ...

I was sorry to hear that it's arrived, but it was inevitable. As far as we know (my current client is the Swedish Dept. of Agriculture, so I get some inside information), waterfowl are not more susceptible but their close contact lives makes it easier for the virus to spread in a colony. Obviously, ...

According to my diary (French, but covers the French speaking countries of Europe - Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg), yesterday was the start of Spring! We had 15.5C here and in Rennes (our 'big' city) it hit 17C. We hit -17C last night. The long, cold winter is getting very boring now. And mor...

Det är svårt att lära sig svenska. Även mina svenska kompisar tänkar att svenska är ett svårt språk och vill gärna prata engelska om jag känner mig för lat att prata svenska. Har ni gått till sfi än?

Sorry folks, no more Swedish on this forum

Hi LynneBee. Great to have another swedish-brit here (we're a growing group, it appears). It sounds like you're up in the frozen north 8) I'm not far from Jönköping but as we're 350m up, our climate isn't that much different from yours. Now if only the snow would go away so I could get digging.

Latest news from Sweden is that isolated cases of H5N continue to be found. So far, no cases of H5N1 have been found (the variation that can infect people). The most troubling find a few days ago was H5N being found in a dead buzzard. Presumably the bird got infected by feeding on infected carrion. ...

We also grow our mint in containers (bottomed) and it even survives Swedish winters. Probaby being under 1m of snow when the temperature reaches -25 helps
