Re: ? Best way to start raised beds ?

If they're shallow beds then I'd dig first, then grin and bear the inevitable muck when installing the beds. If not shallow (6 inches plus) I'd go for the option I and Julie above favour - line with cardboard that will break down then fill and plant directly - let the worms do the work underground o...

Re: Air-source heat pumps

I'm not aware of any ASHP that costs less than several thousand pounds heat pumps are big fancy complex bits of equipment - take a look at that link for more info. I've also had lots of tales of woe about heat pumps that have put me off ... so proceed with caution. Are you sure your not mixing up AS...

Re: Adverts on the site and cups of tea

Andy, you can stop ads from certain sites by amending your Google adsense setup - login to Adsense then go to AdSense Setup then Competitive Ad Filter ... that may help.

Re: 5 year olds and farm animals and E. coli

The worrying aspect to me is the pathetic, cosseted world that is being created by the idiots in government and associated vested interests... I must admit I find it truly saddening and wonder where it will all end... Very sad also for all those petting zoo owners, I'm sure it was never an easy way ...

Re: Multi fuel stoves etc

We burn mainly wood on our Charnwood Country 16B Multi-fuel. But we also burn some anthracite when we need a really good, high temperature burn. I can justify burning some coal, at least to myself, as we are situated just outside the South Wales coal field and I have a supply from some old garages t...

Re: Building a Barn...er..shed!

Sounds like my big metal shed which is a telegraph pole framed building with a galvanised metal roof and wood cladding . I didn't put up the poles and roof, but from what I can tell and guess they were hoisted / man-handled into place roughly (this certainly isn't a square building) and sit in deepi...

Re: choose a good multi fuel/wood burning stove with boiler

Start with that large front-room - depending on what you mean by large, but a stove with integrated boiler large enough to heat that room should be sufficient for all your needs. You usually get around half the output to the room to heating hot water. The stove output calculator is a great place to ...

Re: Solid Oak Windows Experiences anyone?

Personally I'd compromise on a more appropriate sustainable hardwood rather than insisting on oak. I think the durability and likely lifespan is worth the extra cost.
