Re: Straw Bale volunteers
Both are right, give or take a few quid  100sqm @ £150000 = £1500/sqm 1000sqft @ £150000 = £150/sqft If you like to be exact, 100sqm is 1,076sqft. I like to keep things simple though! I actually don't know the exact cost of the house. As the build progressed I stopped counting exactly bu...

Re: Straw Bale volunteers
I think my land was 40% of the total cost. Build cost was something in the order of £150/sqft or £1500/sqm. I did use a lot of experienced labor and that is definitely where the cost is. Labour and professional fees probably make up 40% of the total cost. That only leaves 20% for materials but I gue...

Re: Straw Bale volunteers
To be honest, building regs are not an issue, or that's what I found out. A good architect and a sympathetic engineer is all that's required. I am sure the council is more open minded to alternative building styles than people might at first imagine.

Re: New to heating stoves
I put a Morso Squirrel in the straw hoose and despite the insulation, the Squirrel is too small. It's the only form of heating and it's a big volume of air to heat, being open plan and full height ceilings under the roof. The regs up here state that you can't put in a stove with more than 5kW output...

Re: Straw Bale volunteers
Thanks for the interest. The house is finished now - I have been living in it for a year and love it.

Re: Orpington cockerel not maturing...
I had a similar 'am I Martha or Arthur' buff orpington a few years back. I was given two hens because they were huge and a danger the to the previous owner's wee girl. After being relocated to TG, they seriously bullied my other hens and I decided to separate them into their own run. A while later o...

Re: Inexpensive seed suplier
Thanks all, Seed Parade are worth a good look. I have used Real Seeds in the past too. Chase/HDRA have mucked up far too many orders in years gone past to deserve any of my cash. Customer service scores zero in my book...

Inexpensive seed suplier
I remember finding a UK seed supplier a few years back who sold seeds at c.50p a pack. There was no glossy packet outer, only the foil inner hence the reduction in cost. My dull memory thinks it was a well known veg bod like Medwyn Williams or someone similar. Can anyone think of the company at all?...

Re: Are you still smoking tobacco?
The nicotine content varies quite a bit in different blends. So far I am sticking to those in lighter content. I doubt I will ever progress to plugs or ropes which, according to reviews and youtube vids, blow your socks off! I think it's the quality of the tobacco and the lack of chemical additives ...

Only if you close your eyes and really concentrate lol
I agree though on the US blends. A pal is going over in January and I will be giving him a wee list!

Re: Are you still smoking tobacco?
Oddly enough, I don't find the pipe addictive. Perhaps this is beacuse I have never smoked cigs. It's the mediative element that I most enjoy, along with the immense variation in tobacco blends along with the ritual of preparing a pipe. I liken pipe smoking to wine drinking. Pipe tobacco ages well a...

Re: Are you still smoking tobacco?
That would be me. I had a crappy basket pipe and some vanilla cream. I gave it another go with some decent baccy and a Falcon and never looked back. Why do folk get encouraged to start with aromatics? Not the best idea in my opinion. I do follow a lot of pipe presenters on YT but dont present myself...

Re: Are you still smoking tobacco?
I have about 8 pipes I use in rotation. I mainly smoke straight pipes and favour my Falcons. I also have a Peterson Donegal Rocky, a Lovat and a wee Stonehaven. Different pipes tend to be dedicated to different tobaccos. My Stonehaven and Lovat for burleys, my Donegal for latakias and the Falcons fo...
