Re: East Midlands meet up (please read even if not "local")

Sorry, I've been away from the forum for a while.

I may be free that weekend, just need to check with framily that nothing has already been arranged (I'm frequently the last to know). Will update over the weekend.

Cheers
Lisa

Re: down at the allotment and in the garden what are you up to

2 of us put in a long session on Tues: harvested & cleared the last of the broad beans & early peas. Harvested lettuce, garlic & first of the new potatoes. Planted out beetroot, winter cabbage, last of the courgettes & further batch of mixed lettuce leaves. Picked caterpillars off th...

made my first net cloche for the strawberries
I hope yours is more successful than the net I rigged up from an old net curtain.

The site's resident foxes have been using the net as a toilet. And one had eaten something that gave it a very unpleasant 'episode' :pale:

We're harvesting peas & waiting anxiously to see if our Broad beans can fatten up a bit before they're swamped by black-fly (no amount of pinching out growing tips is detering them). My BF declared the peas 'the best he's ever tasted' We've netted the strawberries (using an old net curt...

Before using plastic check that the Lottie Site Committee allow it. Ours doesn't, nor carpet. But we can use cardboard - my bf works in IT so I get him to save the boxes that new kit arrives in - & landscape fabric. We've used landscape fabric on the paths, to be covered with bark chippings (but...

The first task of a Transition Project is awareness raising - hence the films & talks - this builds up a body of supporters who can take forward other projects. I signed up after a a fascinating talk by Richard Heinberg, followed by a bit of brainstorming about what we could do. A third group is...

I'll be at The Big Session too.

My favourite festival - I can walk to it & walk home again for a comfy bed & decent shower. After the mud last year a decent shower was very important.

Damn, I'm getting old.

Finally made it back here, The workshop on rural communities tackling climate change was incredibly inspiring. Rob Hopkins is an excellent speaker & has a message which starts doom-laden but is ultimately very positive. The other speakers were from Sustainable Youlgreave & Ashton Hayes (aimi...

I potted up loads of AV babies & gave them away in pretty (& cheap) pots as presents over the last couple of Christmas'. The remaining potted-up babies aren't looking too good, but the parent plant is still producing like mad. I've left them on the parent plant for the time being & it ha...

Okay then, might try growing one in the greenhouse & one outside - see which works best. Actually not sure we've planted runners yet. Most of the beans bed is occupied with broad beans interplanted with peas. We've planted some fancy yellow & purple beans which have started to make an appear...

kidney beans

I picked up a couple of kidney bean plants for 25p each at a village fete on Sat. Trouble is, none of my veg. gardening books mention them.

Do I treat them like other beans or do they need any special treatment?

Yeh, I'm a bit concerned about the logo thing, but I've been to a Transition Town event in Leicester & the audience was very representative of Leicester's population. The awareness raising & other events being planned are very encouraging. I'm going to a workshop tomorrow about how rural com...
