Re: Shredded paper

with oil ? not very eco  .... when using water you just need to be patient. I made the blocks not too big (size of a small round tin can and others about the size of a small brick) and put them in my shed to dry. It took some time (weeks, months,...) but when I burned some of them this week...

Re: Shredded paper

I got quite a lot of shredded paper from my office : I use it for the chicken coop and they like it for sleeping and laying their eggs. I also use it in my two -small- homemade paperbrick-makers.

saving water in the shower

In our shower we always put a bucket : before the water is warm it takes a few liters. I aim the shower into the bucket and catch the cold water. Every shower I save about 5 liters of water; that water I can use to clean or flush the toilet !

blueberry

I also finished building my fruitcage around my berries (red berry (in flemish : jenever berry) , blueberry, raspberry....the last few years I tried it with nets only but that was such a mess and birds still got in and stole the fruit. This year will be different, my feathered friends  I do...

seeds

Hi, here in Vlaanderen (Belgium) I'm a member of VELT (www.velt.be), an group for ecological living. Every year we get the chance of buying bio-seeds for the (vegetable) garden. These products are bought in companies like De Bolster (www.bolster.nl - site in dutch only) in Holland and also a few fre...

brocolli

Hi, it's been a while, but I'm back. Harvest was quite allright this year (especially appels and berries) but my brocolli was a disaster. All my plants were eaten by caterpillars. Every early morning I plucked them away, but it was no use. And because I refuse to use pesticides I wonder what I can d...

the war on slugs

Hi, if I catch slugs I throw them in the part of the garden where I keep my chickens. Better is to feed slugs to ducks, because sometimes chickens don't even want to eat slugs. Also I use a biological product called 'escar-go' : it's 100% biological and slugs are attracted to it. It is supposed to d...

harvest

just harvested our peas. We bought biological seeds/beans this year from a dutch company (via our gardeners club www.velt.be). I used about 3 square meters to plant the beans and we got about 2,5 kg of peas. Not bad for the first time I tried growing peas. We already ate some of them tonight and the...

recycling corks

In the city of Liège (in Wallonia, the french speaking part of Belgium) there is a firm called 'Le petit Liège' ('Liège' is also the french word for 'cork') and they recycle corks and turn it into insulation for homes. http://users.swing.be/petit.liege/ is their website (sorry only in dutch...

recycling

we can also take our recyclable stuff to the local 'container park' : every town has one of these places (run by the town coucil) where we can bring the stuff that can be recycled : plastic, metal, glass, construction rubble, paper, wood, etc...etc... the place is filled with large containers, one f...
