Re: Squash harvest

The candy roasters look the same as ones I grew a few years ago which were called jumbo pink banana. Mine are not great this year - hardly surprising considering the weather. I have some Queensland blues that are looking quite good, and various other big squash/pumpkins. Not sure how many of them ar...

Re: DIY bathroom - leveling floor

I think it's asking a bit much to use it to raise the level by 30mm. I would either screed it with sand/cement, or lay timber boards on top of the concrete.

Re: Not really new here....

Hi Magpie, welcome back
Why miserable winter, has it been cold there? - seems like everyone has had mixed-up and unusual weather this year :(
Get out there and clean off some of those weeds, and sow a few seeds. You'll feel better once you've started :flower:

Re: Worst summer in living memory

It's been a difficult year. Not as bad here as you've had, but there's been quite bad drought in Sussex. There was very little rain for about 3 months, from around the beginning of May. The ground got so dry that I was watering nearly all my veg every couple of days, and I could never give it enough...

Re: Sarpo potatoes

Interesting article. I grew Mira last year and thought at first that the taste was poor - but after keeping them over winter, they kept really well and I thought they tasted much better. Have grown some again this year and cut the tops off a couple of weeks ago. (as I did with all my spuds) Will dig...

Re: What are you harvesting atm?

I've been digging Anya and Picasso spuds. Dug 6 roots of Picasso and got 29lb of tubers
Still quite a few in the ground, and soil is pretty wet now so I want to get them lifted before the slugs get them all :flower:

New potatoes. Shop vs home grown

Have any of you wondered why or how supermarket new spuds have tough skins, whereas home grown ones have soft skins that rub off easily?
Perhaps one of you knows how they do this?
I have a theory, but it's hard to find any concrete information on the internet.

Re: What are you harvesting atm?

Beautiful little gem lettuce and various salad leaves. New potatoes, swiss chard, courgettes, just about to pick first broad beans. Have picked 3 cucumbers from tunnel, and flat french beans in there just about ready :) Oh, nearly forgot. Loads of strawberries, and have even had a few raspberries fr...

Re: Why are cardboard coffins so expensive?

It's like KeithBC says - cashing in on a captive market. You can buy one on Ebay for £300 or a wicker one for £100. I've also looked at them for sale in other places in the past and you can buy one direct vastly cheaper than the funeral companies will charge. It's a rip-off, like so many things in t...

Re: Bending the rules on selfsufficienish on growing own veg

I don't think there any rules for being self-sufficientish pumpkinpie - you can do whatever suits you  :thumbright: I've been known to buy a few plants as well. Sometimes it's the only way to get the things you want growing in time  Good luck with all your veg this year, and enjoy...

Re: Wine from supermarket juice?

I'm surprised you haven't had more replies to this. I'm not an expert, but cider is made from pure juice, so if you use it neat then you should get cider :) - if you do that then don't add much sugar. I'd dilute it and make apple wine myself. 2 to 1 or maybe 4 to 1. If you did 4 parts water you'd ge...

Re: cordless electric chainsaws /pruners

I haven't used a cordless saw, but my experiences with other rechargeable tools say that batteries are always a problem. When they're new they usually work quite well, but the batteries soon lose their power. Particularly cheap ones, which are pretty useless, but even more expensive ones I still fin...
