Re: "Self Composting Toilet" or "Bucket and Chuck it"

We tried a dog loo when we had a great dane. It might be ok for little dogs, but the great dane filled it :?

Re: plastic chicken house

Niki's got an old playhouse as a chicken house. It works really well and is designed to be easy to clean. She got it from freecycle - it's one of those plastic wendy houses that kids have. It looks nice as well as providing the chickens with a nice place to live. They got through the winter really w...

Re: tried and trusted mead recipe?

I made some quite a few years ago.

I used 6 jars of honey from the £1 shop.

Added enough water to fill my giant saucepan and boiled it. Then I added tea, lemon juice and yeast.

It never cleared properly, but was quite yummy!

Re: Competitive gardening for a TV show

You're right that they want either people who will argue, have no prior knowledge of what they're doing, or who are completely inept. Super.niki and I applied to be on that farmer programme. We didn't get through. When we watched it, we realised why - all the people on the programme had no idea abou...

Re: weight loss 2013

right, so count me in again.

Last time I tried to lose weight, I lost an inch off my waist, but put on 2kg somehow.

I'm going to give the 5:2 a go too. It sounds doable. I reckon Wednesdays and Saturdays for me (no classes on Wednesdays, and Saturdays are my lay-in days  ).

Re: What interesting or unusual edible plants have you grown

I grew tea once. It did really well in a jar on some kitchen roll, but when it got transferred to a pot with soil in it (the right type and everything) it shrivelled up and died. I've grown avocado before as well. They've grown into plants but then disappeared. Not sure what happened to them. I grew...

If you're a knitter you can punch a hole in the top and put yarn in it to hold it while knitting/crocheting.

Re: Self sufficientish Toilet Paper

could be worse...our ex-neighbours used to throw nappies down the toilet...quite how they got them to flush I don't know, but we knew when the grandchildren were visiting because our manhole had to be opened and rodded a few days later :?

Re: Hand Sewing Patchwork

I made a sock blanket like Mrs Flibble's (at the moment, to be fair, it's not a blanket as much as a piece of material). Just cut the tops off the socks (then reuse as hairties...). Then cut straight across at the heel to made a tube. Then cut the heel off completely (just the heel bit) and then the...

Re: Calling dog experts!

So...update on Nucky's weight! I took her to Shanghai to the Western vet (I really don't think most Chinese vets are clean enough) to get spayed. The vet there was British and trained at the Royal Veterinary College at Potter's Bar. He had a good look at her and gave her a good all-over check. I ask...

Herbalists among us...Help!

I suffer from Urticaria (the idiopathic, unknown cause variety).

It keeps coming up and the antihistamines aren't working anymore.

Is there anything herbal that might help? I can get stuff translated and go to the Chinese Medicine pharmacy (I LOVE those places, they smell so earthy and lovely!).

Yeay!

I've got both sizes (lost my small one so i ordered the next one - then found the small one!).

I'm still (adamantly) nulliparous, so it's good to know that it'll keep going.

Re: All things yarny...

I've tried a few times, but me and DPNs are just not friends :( I'm trying a pair of crochet socks at the moment - they're in the second stage of crocheting, I did something wrong the first time and they got disastrous. I've made the sox on two sticks a couple of times and they usually come out well...

Re: Richard III Found!!?

I saw both the documentaries on him. I've always been a bit of a RIII fan. My sister used to walk across that carpark daily when she was in Uni in Leicester. She feels a bit guilty for stomping on him now  The hunchback thing does make me wonder how accurate historical reporting is. I know they...
