We've a similar size of place and type of soil in an exposed area too. I've found willow, beach, birch and rowan to be most successful. They also seem to be the most abundant naturally occurring species in the area too.

I read somewhere (can't remember where) that 5 acres was the area required per person to be totally self sufficient. More is required as you start to use animals and machines for assistance. You didn't mention it but I suppose a lot depends on the climate too as we (in the UK) also need some land to...

I was in forestry for 30 years then retired through an accident, i loved my job fortunatly i still get to walk around the woods that i managed and visit the woods that i planted to see how they are maturing, my job gave me an insight about the enviroment and when i retired it was a natural progress...

If anyone out there has an oil boiler not firing up in this weather the try heating up the filter on the tank. We had some moisture in ours freeze which stopped to oil flow to the boiler.

I've been loving my bike recently. A couple of weeks ago I was the only vehicle to make it up one of the hills near where I stay

Don't let yourself get wet. Invest in Gore-Tex boots, trousers, jacket and gloves, also wear waterproof socks just in case. As mentioned before, layer yourself. When I'm in remote spots on my own I always take two mobiles, each one with a SIM from a different provider. Not exactly a tip for bad weat...
