This featured on BBC World Service the other night, and seems to be getting a fair bit of international coverage. The reporter said that the farm was most definitely not an eyesore, as Trump described it, and the area was extremely beautiful. But he did say that local opinion was divided about the p...

These are mineral wool - glass fibre or Rockwool type stuff, Cheapest is 100mm thickness (also available up to 170mm), which is not up to current building standards, but will be waaaay better than nothin...

Well done, Martin; glad it's going so well for you. You might also be interested in EasyUbuntu . This is not yet an official Ubuntu application, but it installs all the media codecs and stuff that you are likely to need. According to the website, it is intended for one or two versions earlier of Ubu...

There's a tale of somebody we like
With a crunch and a scrape and a strike
It's of woe and affray
It's a show of dismay
It's of Stoney in Transit on trike

Get better soon, Stoney.

It perhaps doesn't have a huge self-sufficientish angle Well, actually... To someone who deals in computers at a higher level than me, that's probably true, but I'm definitely a low-end computer user. The whole point of me running on Linux is so that I can step off the consumerist treadmill that Mi...

VirtualBox - A Recommendation

From time to time the subject of Linux crops up in this section. For those of you in two minds about it, or don't want to give up on Windows completely, I thought I'd give a mention to VirtualBox , which I've been experimenting with for a few weeks. This is a very clever program which can be run in ...

Here's some theory, if you are interested: Painting the pebbles black isn't really going to make much difference - this is something that only applies to radiant heat (remember that heat can be moved about by either conduction, convection or radiation). I would contend that in this situation, the he...

I think that's an excellent article, Milims, and the new title is very clever, too.

And I see you're carrying on with traditional humour:
Each time she opened her draws to share the wondrous treasures she kept in there...

I could write a personal thesis about this, but I won't. I will say, however, that when I was young I seemed to form a sort of 'relationship' with the music I listened to. This may have been because an LP cost £2.25 and my pocket money was five bob a week, so I bought one record occasionally, and p...

I keep thinking I should do a permaculture course sometime. I reckon Graham Burnett, who posts here from time to time, might be your man. Have a look at his SpiralSeed site. IIRC, he runs courses at Dial House, in Essex (never been there, so this is not a recommendation, but it sounds like a thoroug...

Just to add to the confusion; a 'thermal store' is a specific type of hot water tank. It's not to do with the amount of insulation it has, or whether it's vented or unvented; it's to do with the way the heat is exchanged and stored. There are variations on a theme, but at its simplest, in a boiler-h...

I recently refitted a bathroom for someone who had this put down on the floor. I put oil-tempered hardboard down as a ground for it, but the fitter was not impressed and said it had to be plywood - I don't understand why, but apparently that's the way they do it (actually, the Marmoleum website seem...

I only saw the four letters and still had a chuckle. Why do you think we couldn't figure out your meaning from that? I'd say it was enhanced by its brevity.

Surely the only thing I missed by not seeing the smilies was what you think of the intellectual capacity of your reader(s).

You wouldn't be talking about Martin would you? Are you saying he uses a lot of emoticons? I didn't know that. But I'll try not to think any less of him because of it. Mind you, if you block out the emoticons you won't know when people are being serious or not!!! Now, you see, I can actually tell t...
