Foot square/Raised bed/Earth box thingy

Okay - I've taken on board all of these things and I've gone for a 5 foot by 4 foot raised bed which will be planted on the square foot gardening basis. Its a converted part of the "patio" - a paved area usually known as the back yard. So far, I've taken up the slabs (heavy), removed the archaic tre...

How about hitching up those slugs you keep finding? Slow, but very sedate, and you couldn't get lost. Just turn around and follow the silvery trail ...

If you've got 6 dandelions now, next year it will be 100. And your neighbours'll have a few too.

Mothballs - put a couple in your hand and squeeze. That particular moth will avoid your kitchen like the plague in future.

Sounds like a laugh - OK, my lucky (ho ho) number has always been 5. What have I let myself in for?

In which case everything is as it should be. Keep the demijohm comfy and warm and it'll keep going for a while yet - even if apparently slowly. My latest was started two days after yours and it's down to one bubble every 11 seconds.

Andy - please add yeast immediately. I've just re-read one of my earlier posts and realised where this idea came from - Vit. B. isn't a yeast substitute, but more of a yeast super-charger. If you don't put any yeast in, nothing will happen - sorry I misled you a bit. Silver Ether - it's a little ear...

Sex ratio

No, no, no ... not like that ...

Just out of interest, does anyone know the ratio of males to females posting on this site? The Margos, Jerrys, Toms and Barbaras tend to be a little misleading.

Silver Ether - by my calculations, your gallon of fermenting water should now be at the "lemon barley water" stage. Try a glass now - live, straight out of the demijohn. If the timing's right, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Thanks for the Spreadsheet ... big surprise No. 1 was how little is needed for a family. But that's all to the good, and gives me a great guide, so converting it to our needs should be a walkover. Thanks again.

The bit about her skin growing around the seat looks a little odd. Can skin do that? Does this mean that if I hug a tree long enough, then I'll enter into a permanent relationship with it? I know a few people who never seem to move from the same barstools - now I know why ...

Bean Surprise

My father used to make this (1950s), although where he got the idea from is anyone's guess. I had to recreate it from memory, but I'm sure I got it right because it's delicious. He called it bean surprise, I suspect, because he couldn't think of anything else when we asked him. Part cook potatoes an...
