Yipee

When asked if we could keep chickens, our landlady responded with " Of course you can, ducks would be nice as well." :hello1: :hello1: :hello1: So we can stop dreaming and start serious planning. If there are any chook owners in or near the Truro area who would be open to us visiting and a...

Re: A woodland vegetable patch?

So far we are focussing on planting leafy crops where the tree roots are densest and root crops where we can get a reasonable bed of soil. J. Artichokes we have planted in a special little plot on their own as experince taught us that once in never out. We found a rockery under a carpet of weeds (wh...

Re: Lucky ol' us

We never got into the home owner thing so we rent. Our landlady and her husband have dorset sheep in the fields, beehives and also keep chickens themselves. They are also heavily into craft work so are of a like mind to us. Hopefully this is it for us until we start being fertilizer ourselves....

Lucky ol' us

Reading some of the threads regarding weeds, awful soil etc we are really crossing our fingers. The house we moved intop hadn't been lived in for at least 12 months and the garden was overgrown (still is to a large extent. Usual problem of not knowing what was in it. So farwe have nettles (had some ...

Re: Blinking back the tears.....

I read this thread partly with amusement and partly with embarassment that any husbands can be that bad  Sue and have a mutual understanding that neither of us will ever get things the way the other would like so we don't try to. In our thinking nature is never in straight lines, rarely does t...

Re: Chicken query

Possibly silly question coming up. If / when we start with chickens, the ideal place in our garden is amongst soem trees in a small wild area of the garden. Fencing it in wouldn't be too much of a problem but I am wondering whether predators could get in via the trees. Also would the hens be happy a...

Re: windowsill growing

Don't know if you should and it probably depends on where you live (we are don in Cornwall) but we have peppers (chili & sweet) tomatoes, beans, french, runner (yardlong) and broad) spinach, leeks, corurgettes all growing in a conservatory and have already potted some on.

Re: I've got seedlings!

Two yars ago we went on holiday for a fortnight and when we came back we couldn't get into the greenhouse as the tomatoes had gone ballistic. We hadn't taken any shoots off before we went and we ended up with bowls of tomatoes red and gren in the kitche. They went into just about everything we cooke...

It is kept in a seperate compartment made of brick at the back of the hortt bed and the heat goers through holes in the dividing qwall. They gre pineapples in that on...

Re: Help with grape vine cuttings please...................

I picked up 2 vines cheap from a well known, well hated store, 1 black, 1 white (why white & not green?) The green vine shooted about 10 days ago and now has shoots 2" long and will son be ready to put in situ. The black hadn't moved and we thought that we had lost it. Yesterday it started ...

Re: Can you make a living from a smallholding?

We got hooked on the idea of a smallholding back in the early 70's and even found a place we could afford in Shropshire. When we looked at all the pros and cons including all the things that we would have to buy in we realised that we just didn't have what it takes. The idea is still there with us, ...
