There's a thing called "three sisters", hand on I'll just do a google . . . it's corn, beans, and squash. You interplant them and they all benefit each other. Here's a website about it http://www.kidsgardening.com/growingideas/projects/March02/mar02-pg1.htm but if you search for "three sisters" you'...

It's scarily addictive isn't it? The Melinda Coss book was the one my sister bought me, but now I love "The Soapmaker's Companion" by Susan Miller Cavitch just as much although the batch sizes are much bigger. Cavitch is closer to my "earthy" instincts, whereas Coss is a bit more dainty, and more in...

Ooh, are you a soaper, too Luath? My sister got me a book about soapmaking for Christmas and I was quickly hooked. I love making soaps with food ingredients in - strawberry and banana, honey and oatmeal, chamomile tea, goat's milk. I don't know why but they really appeal to me.

Fair enough, Davina. Shall we compromise - I agree that "Because I said so" isn't a good answer if it means "I know my request is unreasonable but do it anyway" or "There is a good reason for my request but I'm too lazy to explain"?

Wales is fabulous. Stunning scenery, vibrant cities, great food, great culture, friendly people (don't believe the contrary stereotypes). I also appreciate the pace of life there - it's a happy medium between English haste and Irish standstill. I like the way the Welsh language is so vibrant nowaday...

cir3ngirl I'd guess you aren't a parent ;-) Sometimes "Because I said so" is the best answer. There's a time and a place for detailed explanations to a four-year-old, and then there are times and places where four-year-olds should bl**dy well do what they are bl**dy well told because I'm the adult a...

I'm a big fan of radishes. They're one of the quickest things to get out of the ground. I bung them in all over the place.

I've read the "Greening A School" discussion on your site, Martin, and found it more helpful than the Gipe article. I think I understand what you're getting at now, although I take Stew's points too, but as I said I'm very ignorant about the topic so I don't really want to get involved. One thing I ...

It says "I've written elsewhere why roof top mounting of micro wind turbines-of any wind turbine-is a bad idea, so I won't go over the same ground again". I looked at some of the other articles and they don't explain either, but say it is complicated and explained in his books. I'm not being funny. ...

I hate the "real world" one as well. In my other life I am a university lecturer so you can imagine I get pretty sick of that one.

I was wondering that, too. I guess you'd have to divert your water outlet pipe somehow.

I use a Wash-It Laundry Ball instead of laundry powder. I got it from Lakeland Limited: http://www.lakelandlimited.co.uk/product.aspx/!5718 It's a plastic ball that contains little pellets that somehow clean your clothes without detergent. My mum got one for use at her cottage in Ireland which has a...
