Re: Deterring Flies

I haven't had a problem with flies in the summer days since I put the compost bucket outside the back door. It was attracting those little beetle type flies. I think they like yeasty smells because they used to invade the breadbin too. The ones we have problems with are the minute midges that come a...

Re: Pulling in our horns!!

Just come to this thread for the first time. Lots of good advice on it and i hope you are coping well. When my kids were little i used to buy fat ladies tent dresses at the jumble sale and make them dresses with the fabric. When i had too many hens a couple of years back i put all my eggs into a bas...

Re: 101 uses for a pair of old tights/stockings

We have a hen with an injured wing. I made a body stocking with the shorts part of a pair of tights with holes cut for the other wing and to fully expose her vent. It's been on four days now and hasn't budged. she seems quite happy in it.

Re: Little produce carrier bags in the supermarket...

.....the key is in my remembering to put the wee bags back in the big jute bags so they are already there before we go shopping You're not alone in that one :icon_smile: I have thirteen fabric shopping bags - never manage to fill them all - but they live in the boot of my car. Whenever I forgot to ...

Re: Freezer bag alternatives?

I wash and reuse plastic bags too. It looks like widow twankeys wash-house above the kitchen sink some days. I bought a couple of packs of really strong ones with zip tops to use over and over for my bread and freeflow veg. They're indestructible. I don't write on them any more for the same reason. ...

Re: Does anyone here wash all their clothes by hand?

When i was young and we were just starting out, I did all my washing by hand. You can get quite a lot of water out of heavier items by holding them at one end and whirling them round above your head [helicopter style]. Do I need to add that we did this out in the yard?.........state the obvious, tha...

Re: Any ideas for old candles ?

I just wanted to say thanks to the people that mentioned making firelighters with wax candles etc. I tried throwing a handful of chipped bits of old candles into the fire the other night and it worked like a charm. Hubby will never have to go outside to chip up kindling in the dark because we have n...

Re: Balding Sheep

Sometimes a ewe will cast her fleece in parts during pregnancy or just after lambing. Not sure what the cause is, but it always seems to be the ones who have had triplets that do it. They get a sudden demand for nutrients from the growing lambs inside them towards the end of pregnancy. I usually giv...

I could give you reams of unwitting backhanders from my middle child, she still does it today but here's one of my favourites;

''Oh Mum, she's ever so popular, all the men were fornicating over her''
