Re: Should spell checkers be mandatory ?

English has more sounds than it has letters. Native English speakers (should) know when to change the pronunciation of a word according to context, to the other letters around it, or simply due to historic reasons. Think about how you say 'and I can swim' in a normal voice and how you would say it i...

Re: Shopped: the shocking power of British supermarkets

Ha ha! I didn't realise this site automatically asterixed out the name of the supermarket that shall not be named. Does it work with L***n Town FC too? Here it should all technically be taxed, but nobody really cares or expects an impoverished peasant selling a few kilograms of tomatoes or some surp...

Re: Shopped: the shocking power of British supermarkets

Fortunately T***o hasn't made it to Romania (yet). The market here is dominated by Carrefour, Cora, and Mega Image, plus a few other chains like XXL, PennyMarkt, Profi, and I believe a Lidl has opened recently. The prices in the supermarkets aren't a lot different to those in the west, depending on ...

Re: Cookbook ebooks low sales for a reason?

I was just going to point out the same thing as Mrs Moustoir - there are programs you can use to convert from one format to another (from .pdf to .mobi, for example). I store all my books on my HDD and just transfer a few books at a time to my e-reader to save cluttering it up. I also read it in the...

Re: Cookbook ebooks low sales for a reason?

Plus on an e-reader you can boost the font size and make it easier to read. That and the lightness of the device also make it a lot easier to read weighty classics.

Re: What i'm brewing at the moment

I have 11 litres of traditional mead in the FV at the moment. I'll probably be racking it into a carboy in about a week, to clear. Then I'll probably get a wheatbeer on the go ready for the summer. Lots of good unprocessed honey available here directly from the beekeepers. The prices aren't too bad ...

Re: Cookbook ebooks low for a reason?

I have an e-reader and it's really good. Living abroad it's hard to get hold of Engish-language books and so getting my Kindle was really boon. It's also handy for travel - beats filling up valuable luggage space with reading books. I've certainly read a lot more since I got hold of the e-reader - a...

Re: Brewing suger how is it different

What Carltonian Man said. It's also supposed to improve the body of your beer slightly. I generally use the brown candy sugar for dark beers (especially some of the Belgian darks) to give a nicer colour and a slight caramel-like flavour. Other than that, I don't think it's really going to make a lot...

Re: Should spell checkers be mandatory ?

You have to be a little careful before criticising. There are people who frequent forums who may suffer from dyslexia, be visually impaired, may not be native speakers of English, and so on. Also, some people may be offering a useful reply to a question but be typing on a 'phone or some other small ...

That's the problem with spell checkers; they won't pick up on a lot of mistakes.

Re: Should chocolate be outlawed?

No, it shouldn't be outlawed, but the UK Gov should introduce the following measures to control its use: 1. Ban chocolate from all school tuck shops, nipping addiction in the bud. It's outrageous that manufacturers are continually allowed to groom addiction in children. 2. All chocolate to be sold i...

Re: Hi from Bulgaria

Yeah, hard cheeses need to be aged at around 12-17C and a particular humidity. It's during this period of time when they develop their flavours and texture. A reasonably cheap solution (if you have the space) is to get an old fridge (a bit of recycling here, never a bad thing) and rig it up as a che...
