Re: Suggested shrubs please?

Evergreen choices might be Pieris or Azaleas or Skimmia (acid loving but easily managed in a pot) or theres a really nice dwarf clematis called 'pixie' with an amazing fragrance. Other than that old faithful Pyracantha for evergreen with flowers and lots of berries. Daphnes are really good for fragr...

Re: Pine needles..

I found a recipe by Miles Irving to produce pine syrup. Dissolve 80g of citric acid and 1.2 kg of sugar in 1 litre of hot but not boiling water then add 250g of (Scots Pine or Douglas Fir which has a sharper taste) needles and leave to steep for 24 hours. The citric acid helps draw out the aromatic ...

Antenna tech is coming on quite fast. You could get 4 km out of this if you had line of sight to your library....

Re: Unusual herbs

Overusage of valerian can cause kidney problems if taken constantly. I've worked on the premise one week on one week off in general. There are also problems with toxicity of goats rue as it reduces blood sugar significantly hence its use in diabetes treatments. Galega (rue) makes a good green manure...

Re: Does anyone NOT have a television?

I haven't had a TV for 10 years and there's rarely anything on I want to watch. I got tired of dumbed down documentaries and unfunny comedy. However there is an app I have used for a few years. I dual boot my computer meaning it has Microsoft Windows 7 on it as well as a free open source operating s...

Chinese greens if you want good edibles thru the winter...all winter! As a side note explore this site they are AMAZING, very helpful and will teach you how to harvest seed from what you sow. Re: soil testing kits

Another thing you might try is watering it with diluted dissolved wood ash (not coal ash) Potassium is alkaline and so may regulate the pile and enable bacteria to work more efficiently for longer, this is just an educated guess mi...

Re: No use crying over 11G assorted vinegar, but ... :*(

I'd boil and strain the must then ferment the extract. This is generally speaking, if recipes call for other methods then who am I to argue? But this way you've got a strained liquid that doesn't have to be exposed to the environment where it can be polluted really more than twice. Once to bring it ...
