Re: The season of goodwill to all men - what about us ladies?

You're probably not too far off doofaloofa  except the women here are expected to work at least as hard as the men. There is rakia a-plenty. They have just given us a gallon of rakia and two gallons of red wine for Christmas even though I don't drink and OH rarely does It seems that the...

Re: The season of goodwill to all men - what about us ladies?

Christmas is wonderfully low key here, with gentle good will and no hype. Here in the village a lot of the old traditions still live on, but the killing of the pigs in the street on Christmas eve is mercifully a thing of the past, unlike some more remote villages. (Our neighbours it's the 4th Decemb...

Re: Polytunnel

Not yet, OH wants to get it properly anchored with metal spikes round the base frame first. It has come with a slightly damaged fitted cover so it should be OK with a bit of patching for this winter. We don't get much winter wind, main problem is cold and snow. Ideally we would like to do as you men...

Re: Polytunnel

Been wanting a tunnel for a while as fresh veg in winter is not viable in open ground over here, the temperatures get too low for too long and everything (except lettuce and chard) goes soggy on thawing and keels over. A neighbour has given us his as he can't be bothered with it so well pleased. It ...

Re: Grape harvest over

The grape harvest here has been amazing this year...last year was all but a no-show. We have eaten some, dried a few (they have seeds so need them removing, but are small grapes so hardly worth the bother) The rest of one vine were juiced and bottled, some with blackcurrant added, waterbathed for st...

Re: What are you harvesting atm?

After a spot of rain we now have tomatoes (mostly split) cucumber, Tuscan kale, romanesco which I am using as sprouting broccoli which tells you what happened there, and aubergine, peppers and the last of the carrots. Also picked two large split butternuts for the goats. Hoping for beans if we get s...

Re: Worst summer in living memory

Over here in Bulgaria we have had the opposite problem. It has been the dryest and hottest for fifty years After last year being the wettest for thirty. So British style crops did OK last year, this year even the local varieties have suffered...and forget the British! In theory we should have had a ...

Re: Sarpo potatoes

We dug some up a while ago to check (we are ahead of the UK) and tried some. What we found were a few with chunks taken out of them (mole crickets) so one good reason to dig them up. Lots of small potatoes but we have had drought and 40c temperatures so understandable. But interestingly, some had se...

Re: What happened to everyone....

Not sure why but I now have to scroll down and look to see if anything's been posted today instead of clicking on 'new posts' so as I don't really have time to sit and do that as much I will be here less often...ie, when I am bored with nothing to do. I know I am computer stupid, but am I being even...
