Re: Allotment the 2nd

I have started going back to Park Site as it becomes increasingly clear that this is the new norm for the foreseeable future. Cleared enough of it to perhaps crop half the half-plot this year, cover the rest and then get the whole lot up and going for next year :) I'll take some photos when I'm up t...

Re: What are you harvesting now?

Not harvesting much more than nettles and ground elder. We have one new raised bed which was intended for beans but as only one has sprouted from an entire tray of 4 different varieties it may now be a salad bed! Nettles still usable? I've got loads of them - I was freezing them and using them like...

Re: What are you harvesting now?

Fingers crossed for next week - it's getting a little cluttered in my greenhouse now!

Re: Self Isolation

I'm actually starting to kind of enjoy it. I am getting so much done and in some ways the pressure not having to go out to do stuff is quite enjoyable. Mrs. Viper is struggling a bit more. It's much better when the sun shines; that's for sure! The moped made from canibalised other mopeds in the gara...

Re: Self Isolation

Thanks for asking - I'm ok. Officially furloughed now. Not feeling that great, but I think it's a mixture of my ongoing thyroid problem (feeling a bit weak and wobbly, with high blood pressure and palpitations), and the mental stress of just everything. Could be worse. How are you? Are you getting ...

Re: Empty supermarket recipes

I'd kill for a Tunnock's Caramel Wafer right now.

Re: Allotment the 2nd

I've heard this as well. Where I am is big circus and traveller country so many of them are getting roped in. If I were off work I might go for it, but there's no chance of me being set aside in the near future. I've kept well away from Park allotments for three weeks now. It's just not worth the ri...

Re: Empty supermarket recipes

We've eaten a lot of nettles in the last week from out back - Mrs. Viper wasn't a massive fan of the idea but hasn't noticed since that she's been eating them with pretty much every meal.

Re: Self Isolation

Ahh, face masks... looking hilarious and doing very little :)

I've stopped going to the Park allotment for now - too many of the other users are quite elderly and I don't want to make any more risk for them.

I'm concentrating on what's out the back of the house for now :)

I could well get used to this self isolation.
I have to admit, it's productive; I've serviced the car, hoed beds like a fiend, barrowed compost around and done unprecedented amounts of DIY.

For me, it's not all bad so far.

Re: Allotment the 2nd

At the moment I'm just piling it up on a concrete plinth and waiting for it to dry out a bit before I take it home for the bonfire!

Re: Allotment the 2nd

They seem fairly laissez-faire anyway. I'll get up there over the weekend and continue turning over - a lot of people won't be there, i guess!

Re: Emptying the supermarket shelves

The small independent businesses, particularly of a more social aspect are going to fare very badly through this too. On a brighter note, one of these - a vegan cafe, is offering 3 meals a day, for £35/week, delivered daily to the door (locally, of course). Fairly simple food - porridge, soup for l...

Re: Allotment the 2nd

Yes, it's a pile of wood pallets that's been burnt in the middle. I must confess that I slipped down there for an hour at dusk yesterday and started digging when I was sure the site would be very, very quiet. There's a lot of couch grass and docks. I've transplanted a few surplus fruit bushes, moved...
