Re: A personal question...

I don't like historical literature on the whole, it just seems irrelevant, doesn't speak to me at all. I wouldn't dismiss it as rubbish though, or try to dress up my dislike in any kind of intellectualism, just not my cup of tea. Much prefer things written from the latter half of the 20th century on...

Re: HELP - what can I plant now?

It's hot here and I'm still sowing....cabbages, lettuces, spinach, chinese leaves (was a leaf day yesterday) and beans today (fruit till 11am wednesday). I've just got some pumpkins come up too,so if you can find any pumpkin/squash plantlets they'd be good to get out now along with any brassicas.

Re: Abundance of Fruit any ideas what to do with it please

Fruit leather for the kiddies (you'll have to google a recipe, sorry) and for the adults you can half fill a bottle with berries, top up with brandy (rum or whatever), cork and leave for a year, delicious liqueur.

Re: wwoof-ish

Annpan - have you tried HelpX? It's like wwoofing but not necessarily limited to farming and your profile is free. Good luck, IME (as a wwoof host), you'll get a lot of unexperienced people offer - make sure you sort the wheat from the chaff, a lot of them will be kids who say they are "hardworking"...

Re: Paint your house white

Aside from any of this couldn't having masses of white houses be bad for your eyes? Here the villages are completely whitewashed and in the height of the summer you have to walk through with a tight squint, always struck me as a really bad idea.

You're lucky it's only an allotment, here you have to wait for someone to die before you can have a landline :?

Re: Can I make a body scrub?

Can you get a finer sea salt (or whizz yours in a blender) or use bicarb? I wouldn't worry about the type of carrier oil, use what you have or what is cheap. I make a scrub from sea salt, olive oil (because mine is free), lemon juice and grapefruit eo.

Re: photovoltaic panels. How to choose

Perhaps the most important consideration for reducing consumption is to find alternatives to any electrical appliances that produce heat (a cooker would be the worst offender, because they use lots of power and they are used for long periods).

Re: Walnut tree

I read that they start to fruit between 5 and 10 years and mine are probably a little taller than 15 feet but not much - I'm surprised that yours haven't produced yet. Opinion seems to be divided over whether they are self-fertile or not, but there is a general consensus that having more than one tr...

Re: Onions

In case anyone's interested and you've got onions (or other root crops) that are ready to harvest then according to my biodynamic calendar between Sat 7am and Sun 7pm is the optimal time for doing it - apparently it will improve their shelf life. I'm going to try with my onions and garlic and see wh...

Re: Walnut tree

I guess i'm virtually a walnut farmer - i have 34! Is it possible that you missed the flowers? They are green and catkin-like rather than colourful blossom. That said, you'd be able to see nuts by now. Temperatures below-2 will kill the flowers.
