Re: Fight obesity like tobacco

I think Okra has hit the nail on the head. Only when the mighty food corporations are taken to task over peddling junk food without health warnings on packaging (not unlike tobacco) will the penny drop that a diet consisting of now't but junk is going to lead to health problems. In the meantime, I t...

Re: Beware! Laundry in Progress

I know quite a few people who swear by using a dehumidifier to dry clothes. Cheaper to run than a tumble dryer and they take moisture out of the air at the same time.

Re: When will they learn?

The death of so many palm trees across the Mediterranean was caused by importing date palm trees from Egypt, infested with red palm weevils, and it's rapid spread across the region has been caused by the transportation of palms and offshoots from contaminated to uninfected areas.

Re: Argument for gun sports?

It's definitely not for toffs in southern Italy, although the gun licences are really expensive. Hunters here only shoot thrush and blackbirds and the reason most of them give is because they scratch under olive trees, making it more difficult to sweep olives. People who shoot for sport or to sell a...

Re: Argument for gun sports?

Last year 35 people were killed and 75 injured; not bad going for just three-days a week over a period of four months. Among the dead was a mushroom picker and 13 of the injured were either walkers or cyclists. It's also the period when house burglaries rise dramatically.

B-B-Blimey, does your neighbour have Raynaud's Disease or something similar? That's a ridiculous amount of wood  . If Greek houses are anything like Italian ones then insulation will be non-existent: changing doors and windows has made a huge difference to our house. Also, most Italians use s...

Re: Christmas/Winter liqueur

I might give those a try. As my day's of tucking into a fine post-Christmas lunch port are over, we've been enjoying ciliegie di spiritos santos (cherries of the holy ghost) instead. To make, prick fresh cherries, cover in sugar, either alcool puro or grappa and water, shake when you remember and it...

One of our dogs has a bald belly (she's never lost her puppy coat, possibly because she was abandoned at just two weeks old :( ) I could never put a coat on her though because she's a dog and not a child. Come winter time she does appreciate a blanket to snuggle under though

Re: Our first quinces

Homemade membrillo is worth the effort of growing quinces, although I have to make do with Percorino rather than Manchego cheese as an accompaniment.

Re: Christmas Pudding ?

Christmas puddings are very forgiving, you can change the fruit, nut, booze and fat combos and still make a great one. This is the recipe I sort of follow as it is a lot lighter than many others because it uses butter rather than suet. Ingredients 8 oz butter 6oz brown sugar 2-3 eggs 4oz plain flour...

Blitz it up and add it to tomato ketchup to make a lovely fruity brown sauce.

I've an 84-year old neighbour who can lift 100-kilo sacks of olives. When he puts them in the back of his car the front lifts up.

Re: Making a virtue out of a necessity..?

We're a bit like GA, although town for us is only 5kms away, we still only drive in once a week, and make sure we get all we need then. We've budgeted €40 per month for petrol, and if we've used up the allowance before the month is out then we either do without or cycle into town.

Re: Are we entering a new mini ice age?

Just as the parts of Europe affected by the North Atlantic Drift; mainly Ireland, Britain and the Nordic countries have seen colder winters and wetter summers for the past few years, the opposite has occurred in the parts of Europe not affected by it. Down here in Italy, for example, we've seen no r...

Re: Cookbook ebooks low sales for a reason?

The main problem with all e-readers IMO is battery life. I bought several ebooks to read on my ipad on holiday...but you can't read a book on a single charge.. its "10-hour" battery life is down to about 3 hours after a year. And the ferry trip was 5 hours....so I bought a newspaper! My kindle batt...
