Re: Paper logs

Great timely thread for me as I was about to ask the same question... So can I assume that the machines sold for this purpose are not really worthwhile and that pressing and drying are the two key features of a home based solution?

Re: Grand designs

One of the few Grand Designs that is to be truly admired - rather than the usual overly wealthy fools building themselves mansions ... It's a shame that the series doesn't feature more such builds - the last series was particularly thin on such ... you've reminded me of one of my recentish rants on ...

Re: Most practical energy source for renovated home?

Consider multi fuel stoves, not just wood - a decent 12Kw boiler stove comes in around 2k - especially in South Wales a local source of coal (if you can find one) will pep up a usually wood only regime in the depths of Winter Also look into thermal solar hot water - it can be expensive, but it's wor...

Re: Loft insulation

Ive heard that sheep wool alone is the best, apecially for older houses, as you can go and ofer the farmer several quid more than what they get, as they tend to only have the option of selling it cheap as there is no call for it for some reason, they get i think about six quid a bag, and it is a ba...

Re: Headstrongs Software list

Must agree with StripyPixieSocks ... probably the one area I still pay for software is for Anti-virus / Firewalls - treat free stuff with caution in that area - I used to use a Firewall called ZoneAlarm that blocked more or less everything - both good & bad.

Re: Headstrongs Software list

I know many many people with peg-legs and parrots who get me things for a piece of eight. There's no real need to visit Long-John Silver these days as there are excellent free alternatives as Headstrong has pointed out. I'd add>> Graphics http://www.gimp.org/ GNU Image Manipulation Program http://w...

I'm going to China; to Chengdu, a town which is at the tibetan frontier... I will just take photographs, trying not to tell what I think of what I see... It's just a report... Hope I will be able to show my pictures to you as soon as I will come back! I hope your pictures will convey some of the re...

Re: Ground source heat pumps

You can also combine GSHP with 'larger' radiators to avoid having to dig up floors / lay UFH.

I'd also consider Pellet Stoves - arguably a greener solution and certainly cheaper in your situation.

Yes what a terrible woman - started a war to protect British citizens rather than oil and dared to challenge over powerful unions & civil servants ... terrible woman, nothing like the excellent principled career politicians of recent years ...

We had the same thing along the M4 in South Wales last week ... wasn't widely reported which makes you wonder if 'someone' is trying to keep things quiet ;)
