White currants

I inherited a whote currant bush on my allotment, I hadn't heard of them before, they are quite nice, not as tasty as red or black currents, would bulk out a pie like apple does but other than that I'm not sure how to use them- anyone grown them/ eaten them before?

Re: forgive my ignorance

I've tried it and it's not that cheap, if you really need extra organic matter a nice trailer of compost is much more effective and normally cheaper  There's plenty to plant now though- spring cauli and cabbage, pak choi, spinach, carrots, beetroot, even beans may have time and if not they act...

Re: Spinach troubles

I heard spinach is best sown direct into the ground... bit like parsley t doesn't like it's roots disturbed. I do mine that way and it's fine if not way too much (again!!!). Having said that the very first year I did grow in modules and it was overwhealmingly fine then too. I normally sew mine aroun...

Re: Broad beans

The ones I sew in autumn get to eat 2-3 weeks early. I got some autumn ones about 3 weeks ago and some spring ones this weekend. They say broad beans can survive minus 8C but we had -9C one night and just a few got a little brown and soon regrew. worth doing.

Re: No potatoes and rhubarb is dying

When I readthis thread end of May I decided to hang fire a few weeks for my new potatoes.... having hung fire I dug the first yesterday- two potatoes on 1st plant, 3 on second :(- so cold dry springs are definitely bad for spuds.

Re: Seed Saving

I try and save something extra each year, I started with good old runner beans, moved onto peas, Orach (mountain spinach), corriander, parsnip... keep meaning to do broad beans but always can't resist eating them all! I've done potimarron seeds too last year- just waiting to see if I managed to pick...
