Re: Birth-to-potty or sized nappies?

I also didn't know anyone else using cloth (and still don't!!) - but all the disposable fans were very quick to tell me just how awful cloth would be, even though they had never tried it. Some popular things I heard: Your baby will have terrible nappy rash. Your baby will be bow-legged (!!!?????) Yo...

Re: For expectant mums...

Oooh, what a lovely, inspiring story! Thank you!! I think my vague plan is to stay at home for a while before I go in, then fight tooth and nail to be allowed to continue if things are going well. I spent last night reading a few VBAC stories on the internet and was quite disappointed that I didn't ...

Re: Birth-to-potty or sized nappies?

Hi Fizzy Izzy, Best of luck with Bubs! I'm not an expert on any of the brands you mention, but your quantities should be plenty to get you in the swing of things. You'll probably find that you decide what you like/need a couple more of as you go along and you can just buy bits and bobs here and ther...

Re: Tomatoes - what have I done wrong?

Hello, Me again! After 'cheating' and buying a couple of tomato plants, they are now doing very well indeed in the greenhouse and have lots of little yellow flowers on them. As I've not grown tomatoes in the greenhouse before it suddenly occurred to me - do I need to do any kind of pollinating of th...

Re: Pumpkins

Thanks for the tips - I have covered the roots over with the compost and a 'proper' seedling is now pushing through. So, all I need now is a cow or a horse to provide me with lots of poo to keep it well fed :cooldude: Do pumpkin plants like chicken poo? I have lots of that. And if so, can I lob it s...

Pumpkins

Hi, I'm trying to get a pumpkin plant going for my 2 year old for Hallowe'en (ok, for me, but she's a good excuse...). I planted a couple of seeds and nothing happened, so I have tried again in better compost and put them in the airing cupboard. One has sprouted but it looks a bit, urm, strange. It ...

Re: For expectant mums...

Yes, the process they have described for me is rather military. Hospital as soon as labour starts, constant monitoring, surgery after 4 hours if I'm not progressing much. If I'm progressing ok they'll let me go on for 8 hours then wheel me off to surgery if Bubs isn't out. My c-section was almost ex...

Re: For expectant mums...

Gosh - a lot of stories about very long labours :pale: I'm pleased to hear so many 2nd/3rd babies decide to come out much faster than the first one! I'll probably try to stay at home for a couple of hours when things get going, save on too much intervention. But they're hot on wanting to make sure t...

Re: Not for chickens?

Oh lovely. I'll save the leaves for them and chuck them in in the morning. Do you cut them into little bits or can I just leave them in a big lump (I sort of chopped all the cauliflower heads away as I needed them, so the leaves are still in a big kind of bowl shape)?

Re: Not for chickens?

Ooooh, another quick question about what to feed chickens. I have the chicken snack webpage bookmarked but it doesn't mention cauliflower leaves - just the cauliflower heads themselves. Is it safe to give the left over leaves to the girls? Seems a shame to compost it when they could have fun ripping...

Re: Tomatoes - what have I done wrong?

Thanks for the tip DeneciePie. I got 2 seedlings, thanks to the airing cupboard, but then one of them shrivelled up and died. The other is now in the greenhouse making some very slow progress. I think it might also have something to do with the compost I used - it was pretty cheap and not very nice....

Re: For expectant mums...

Anna, the fatigue was worse than the pain as I couldn't sleep through the contractions. I literally was awake for 4 days and nights, and they wouldn't let me go in for any speed it up drugs (pre-banana smoothie knowledge, of course) as my waters didn't break for the first 3 days. By the time they fi...

Re: Caterpillars eating my apple tree

I had a tip from a bloke in the garden centre about grease bands - he said fly papers do the same job, leave less mess on your hands when you have set them up, and cost a fraction of the price. I bought a pack of 4 for about £1. Haven't put them on the fruit trees yet (struggling a bit with this big...

Re: For expectant mums...

I feel your pain, Anna. My first was 4 days!! The hospital kept telling me to have a bath and take paracetamol which, needless to say, wasn't much help. And it STILL ended in a caesarian after all that effort. That's why I shall be tanking up on banana smoothie and absolutely anything else anyone ca...

For expectant mums...

Hi All, Just wanted to mention a little something to those of us who have Ish bumps baking. My mum showed me a magazine article saying that banana smoothies can help to keep labour moving along nicely (I think it was in a supplement with the Mail on Sunday). Apparently the potassium is very good, fo...
