I admit it - it was me what mentioned sitting on the soil with a bare backside to see if it was warm enough to plant. Never tried it myself, but it's reputed to have been the process used by farmers in Lincolnshire in the 'olden days'. I'm a Yellowbelly & have to admit that I've never seen anyon...

On GQT yesterday, someone (probably Bob Flowerdew, but I was tired & can't remember for certain) said in these days of erratic weather patterns we really shouldn't rely on dates to decide when to plant. It's a matter of learning to recognise the right time by the weather. The prog will be repeat...

Not sure why I looked at this thread as I neither have children, nor intend to have children. But, I've looked, so I'll throw-in my twopennyworth: Our local freecycle group often has (laundered) second-hand nappies available. Might be worth you registering with your local group & see if anything...

Hi Eco Worrier, Welcome & thanks for your welcome. It really is a wonderful day here in Leicester today, but I spent the morning in town looking for birthday presents for family members - needed a long rest by the time I returned. It's rare I go into the City Centre these days as I prefer to fre...

Discovered this in Egypt, whilst working there several years ago. My friend didn't speak enough English to tell me the recipe so she cooked it for me, whilst I watched & made notes... Peel & slice spuds into a pan, add sliced onion, sliced tomatoes, stock cube, chunk of butter/ marg., cover ...

Can't help on the envelopes, but I use bubble wrap to insulate plants (wrapped around the pot to protect roots) & the wormery during these cold winter months.

4x4s have been singled out in the gas-guzzling debate & some are offenders, but they are by no means the only ones or the worst. Some BMWs do less mpg than most 4x4s driven by people I know. My boyfriend has one, which is equipped as an expedition vehicle & is effectively a camper van that c...

The caterpillars of the cabbage moth are my big problem - although mostly on decorative plants. I try to leave a few to grow to maturity (I kinda like moths) but most get squashed (I don't like em that much). My boyfriend bought me a head-torch so that I roam the garden at nights despatching slugs, ...

Thanks for all the good wishes - feels as if I've made a whole load of new friends overnight. I stopped being ashamed of my ranting when I discovered the Ranters where a group in 17th century England who opposed the prevailing dogma of religious observance - doing so was extremely brave in that clim...

Although I live in Leicester, I'm a Yellowbelly by birth. That is, a native of Lincolnshire. It's said that farmers in Lincs decided when to sow seed in the spring by taking down their trousers & sitting on the soil. When it was warm enough to sit on, it was warm enough to sow... BTW I'm losing ...

Rantings from Leicester

Hi all, I've looked at this forum, on & off a lot over the last year, for advice on things I'm trying to achieve at home. Finally registering as I now have more time (not working) & must add to the supersistion thread started elsewhere. I live in a terraced house in the heart of the city, so...
