Slugs 'ad all my squashed too. Only things we have gluts of is runnner beans & tomatoes, both easy to preserve. Not to mention easy to eat.

I've given up trying to grow basil outside, I grow it from seed & keep it indoors on a window-sill, albeit a northish-facing one.
