Re: Roses in potatoes

Never heard of it before but it seems reasonable it could work. Might have something to do with hormones as well as the food/water aspect. Having said that I don't think roses are that difficult to strike cuttings from. I've got a lovely one just flowered from a bunch of cheap cut roses I bought in ...

It makes my mouth water for a nice cheese sandwich.

Re: Roses in potatoes

Have never heard of that but sounds interesting.

Do you mean putting the cutting in one potato or in a crop of growing potatoes?

Stories For Homes

Hope nobody me minds me plugging a book I've got a short story in. This is an anthology of short stories on the theme of 'Home' and all royalties are going direct to Shelter. It's £4.99, on e book at the moment, but there are 62 stories in there and the ones I've read (most now) are really good and ...

Re: Just disappeared up my own exhaust!!!

Longer answer: Read back over your post and see how much you actually have done. I find my blog really helpful for this - people are always pointing out how much I'm doing, when all I'm noticing is how much I'm not doing. What a great point Zech. I've only got a very small plot compared to most her...

Re: Duck ponds

Thanks digger, I like the idea of the kids strong paddling pool best. For speed I think a smaller splashplace is better if I can refresh it daily. I've set them up an old porcelain butler's sink today but Vera is suspicious of it and Jack doesn't like swimming! Longer term something bigger and stron...

Duck ponds

Has anyone got any tips for an economical duck pond? We really want them to have clean water to dip into but our second plastic liner has sprung a leak. I've put a couple of plants in that have so far survived the ducks but still the water greens in a couple of days in this weather. Getting it out a...

Re: jam sugar v granulated sugar

I'm not a jam expert and haven't made elderflower but tend to buy the jam sugar. I did try one year buying a bottle of pectin. It took me ages to find it and then I found by the time I'd bought that I'd saved little money by using normal sugar. I think the jam sugar's gone up quite a bit now though....

Re: Attitudes towards thriftiness

Yes I think thriftyness is the new upwardly mobile. I'm fairly sure the man you are talking about is Ben Hatch. He is a Brighton author who goes on road trips with his family (wife a travel journalist) and writes about themeparks and kiddy places. They go on a lot so save what money they can. He wri...

Re: Strawberry advice please

They might be different varieties - which fruit at different times - so they might all flower then fruit in the end.

Could you label plants as they fruit and then, when you get to the end of the season, you will know which ones didn't.

Re: Breeding Muscovy Ducks?

Hello Boghopper and all, I've been away for a while - busy writing. We've got a pair of Muscovy ducks and going through similar traumas. First couple of batches 'our Vera' laid were randomly dropped (and abandoned) all over the place. Some on concrete outside my kitchen door  Finally on ...

Re: Onions and health benefits

I do love onions but have to say I'm not tempted by a roasted one. Going back to the original story I can't help but wonder if chinese whispers added in the the (time traveling) doctor with his microscope but accidentally deleted a fact that say the healthy family were onion farmers. The ones in the...
