Re: Gluten free baking - my cakes come out like Jaffa cakes
Try making a sponge cake instead of a leavened cake, maybe? I have a book somewhere where the author describes making angel food cake out of her home-grown and hand-milled corn flour.

Re: Butternut Squash?
Use it in place of pumpkin for pies, breads, etc.
I make an apple crumble that does well with squash instead of apples. My recipe is posted here: http://ellendra.hubpages.com/hub/Fantas ... ble-Recipe
(I hope that doesn't break the advertising rules)

Re: Where to go?
I'd suggest making a list of what characteristics you're looking for in a place, what characteristics you won't tolerate, and what's negotiable. And, may I suggest putting Alaska on your list of possibilities? I have friends who live there, and if it wasn't for my health problems and the need to sta...

I have that book, it's pretty good, especially concerning tropical or exotic fruits.

Re: Stevia
I didn't bother boiling off the alcohol because I thought a few drops is neither here nor there, and I did see on the net that it can make it bitter if you heat it too vigorously. So that's what causes it! Thank you, with that bit of info I'm taking stevia off my "not worth it" list. I'd ...

Re: Yellow pumpkins
Sounds like a stress reaction causing the vine to abort its fruits. Does it need more water? Is it unusually hot there? Is there sawdust coming out of the vine anywhere? Those would be my best guesses.

Re: What do you love most about being a bit self sufficient?
It's like when you're a kid, and a grown-up is always helping you or doing something for you because you're "too little", then comes the day when you don't let them help. When you insist on doing it on your own. And so what if it turns out messier than it should be, or takes twice as long,...

Re: How do I grow and refine sugar?
A lazy way to get mollasses from sugar beets would be to slice or shred the beets, simmer in water until tender, then drain and use the beet itself as a vegetable. With the pan of juice, set it on a warm stove or heater all day (this is assuming it's winter and you have wood heat, you did say this w...

Re: What to feed quail
If you hang a mesh bag full of acorns over the pen, most birds will love the acorn grubs that crawl out. After a few days you can coarsly crush the nuts in the shell, and they'll pick through for the nutmeats. Be aware that this can sometimes turn the egg yolks green, but doesn't effect flavor.

Re: ...make a barbecue into an oven?
Is the lid attached by a hinge? I once wired a basket to the lid of a grill to turn it into a reflector oven. It worked, although it was too close to the coals to get the heat even, so I'd have to turn what I was baking every 5 minutes or so. Still, I could bake anything that way, as long as the pan...

Re: Plant with Red stem and Black Berries - help identify :)
Looks like pokeweed to me. The berries are poisonous, but they can be used to make ink. In the very early spring, the greens can be cooked in a couple changes of water and eaten.

Re: How do I grow and refine sugar?
Many years ago I saw a tip on using a particular type of juicer to refine sugar with. The person said that if you ran the hot syrup through it, it spun fast enough that the centripital force seperated out the crystals from the impurities. I never tried it, and I haven't been able to find that tip si...
