Re: double vs single glazing

I'm guessing we have the opposite problem to you, but our experience may help you decide. Our house is south south-west facing and so gets full sun from fairly early in the morning. When we moved in we had single glazing which during the summer was OK - we had to have the windows open during the day...

Re: Cheap recipes

I've got this recipe, which I found ages ago, which should fit the bill here. I can't remember where I got it from. Unusually I copied the text intact, because I really enjoyed it. I don't know if anyone's heard of this book but I'd quite like to have get it. Here it is. Lentils With Love Adapted fr...

Re: Living without money! TV programme

I've not watched it - mother's huffing and puffing because the laptop's making a noise while she's watching Bargain Hunt - but I've found it here

Saw a few seconds - I think it might make me angry!

Re: Made yogurt! First time!

I forgot - put a drizzle of olive oil over it before you bake it.

Re: Made yogurt! First time!

As an add-on to stripypixiesocks's yoghurt cheese, when you've made it make a batch of foccaccia dough, spread it on the top, sprinkle with a little coarse salt, black pepper and rosemary. Bake your bread as usual - heaven! Eat warm.

Re: Help with home remedies for poorly foot!

Put one drop of neat lavender oil directly onto the affected area. If you've got some tea tree you can add one drop of that too. You can do this pretty much as often as needed up to 6x day. The lavender will soothe and heal and has some very mild anti-fungal/bacterial the tea tree is a fairly good a...

Re: Growing Celery

I don't think I'll be much use to you, but maybe you'll do better. I grew celery for the first time this year, from small plants bought at a local plant fair. It didn't do very well - got woody quite quickly. I know you should blanch celery (cover it to stop it going green) but as this was a red var...

Re: should seeds be organic to call your veg organic or not?

For me, too, most seeds would be OK, but some are treated with chemicals.

I can't remember which chemical it was, but I was given a packet of white beetroot seeds which were treated.

We did grow them but it made me uncomfortable.

Re: Bread wont rise

Rock hard bread is usually down to the kneading (if I remember correctly - OH uses his breadmaker these days so I've not had much practice recently). You can be too vigorous with it - the people who say you can take all your frustrations out while kneading are wimps. You need steady regular pressure...

Re: You're doing well!

To echo all that's gone before - well done. We're thinking of building another house with all the rubble we've pulled out of our garden - despite being over 50 years old, I think it's always been just grass(it really couldn't be called a lawn!) over about 2' of solid rubble. We've only dug out 6 x 1...
