Re: moving to nw spain

Hola from lush green ANDALUCIA!! I've considered looking at the North, it's clearly beautiful, I've been worried about being off-grid up there (i.e. so much less sun), be interested to hear your plans.

Re: swine flu

Thanks all. To be clear, I'm not bothered about getting ill (i.e. I don't think we're all gonna die!) just that it will be a real PITA as I've got things to do and people to see  not least my driving test which would really be quite useful to pass (living up a mountain with two small kiddies!)....

Re: swine flu

Someone give me a sensible idea of what is going on - I'm coming to the UK on Sunday (via plane), I'm pretty sure we've had a dose but I really don't have the time to sit around being ill (and worse a 4 month old with the flu, not fun). So how many suspected cases are there? How many people here hav...

Re: chocolate berry cheesecake

That sounds fab - currently using up tons of mulberries via the cheesecake method  never thought I could add choc as well :thumbleft: If you want to be really filthy try burning the butter - that is melting it until it turns golden, you then have to strain it as it will have dark specks, but...

Re: swine flu

I think we've had it too...a few weeks back. I've only just looked up the symptoms and we had every single one. I got quite a mild case, just made me feel floppy for a few days, then went to my chest. OH got it much worse, but then he kept trying to work through it - in 40* heat!! In the end we got ...

Re: Solar heated washing machine

oh ok (my machine is similarly simple, luckily) that means that you're wasting hot water on your rinses? which is a shame. i solution like mine would sort that but you've got to be willing to take the top off and start modifying! I can see what you mean, but I'm not a tinkerer I'm afraid. In our ca...

Re: Solar heated washing machine

No just a cold input, but because it's very basic and the heating element is cut out it takes what it gets!!

Re: Solar heated washing machine

Until you mentioned it I never considered that rinsing was done at a different temperature!! No everything comes from our hot water source which is solar by default. We have a small boiler (a slightly larger one than you used to get in small lavvies in offices etc, but the same type), we use it a fe...

Re: Solar heated washing machine

Way over my head, my machine is directly filled from the solar tank and there is a button on the front which disables the heating element so our clothes are just washed at whatever temp the water comes out of the tank (usually mixed down to 40 - 50 degrees). This button seems standard on spanish mac...

Re: BGG 2009 anyone?

I'm torn over whether to go - never been before, and can't decide whether it's for us or not. It's so expensive it needs to be pretty good to make me want to go! Is it over-ridingly hippy (I'm thinking here of the earth energies, healing music and sweat lodge side of things), or is there an equal f...

Re: 'no poo'

Ooops I started something...sorry! I don't have much time right now and I can't remember it all from the top of my head, but I would look into the following (wikipedia might be a start, Pat Thomas of The Ecologist also wrote a book called What's in This Stuff).... Amonium laureth sulphate - sounds l...

Re: BGG 2009 anyone?

Who's gonna organise and SSish meet-up?

....and who wants to cuddle my Nancy-boo while I have a shower (at least once would be nice)....just realised that is a major logistical going with a tiny babe by myself, oops.

Re: Spain or Portugal or France?

I'm a wwoof host in Las Alpujarras and my house is for sale.

Please ask what you would like to know. I think self-sufficiency is infinitely more doable here than in the UK as there are fewer restrictions and cost of living is much lower (for example I pay less than 9 euros a year in council tax!!).
