Re: Yes!! An allotment has finally come up

Just been to pick the keys up, as it were. The other allotmenteers are absolutely lovely, full of tips and one of them gave my 3 year old a cucumber (she LOVES them). I don't think I'l be able to get rid of the weeds without using weedkiller, some of the dock is taller than me. WOuld sticking a memb...

Re: Any raspberry experts?

Mine look really healthy though, and they put out a lot of new plants in the spring. Should I still replace them every few years like strawberry plants?

Green hazelnuts

I took my girls on a walk in the woods today and they had a whale of a time picking up green hazelnuts off the ground. Can we do anything with them or are they no good? From the looks of a lot of the nuts on the ground, there won't be any ripe ones left come autumn; lots of woodpeckers, mice and oth...

Re: Any raspberry experts?

[quote="boboff" I have found that with Autumn Raspberries, they fruit earliest in the year on 1 year old wood, but a small crop. [/quote] Yes, that's exactly what mine are doing. At the moment they're in my garden and I've got maybe half a dozen canes really squashed in to a small space. T...

Any raspberry experts?

I was given some raspberry canes from a friend last year. They're doing really well and producing lots of fruit but I don't know anything about them. They produce fruit from June onwards (until Nov last year but I don't know if this is because of the mild autumn), so would this make it a summer frui...

Re: Yes!! An allotment has finally come up

Thanks for the tips! I am planning to take it slow, despite having lots of big, and possibly mad, ideas. Jo, we're just the other side of Huntingdon from you. I was thinking of green manure but first things first! A lot depends on how long I can persuade my children to stay there; they ...

Re: Yes!! An allotment has finally come up

Ah right. We're hoping to get a standard poodle in a couple of years when my youngest daughter is a bit older.

Re: Yes!! An allotment has finally come up

I'm not too worried about snakes, I know my girls are dying to see one. The adders stick to the woods but there are grass snakes very close to the village, in people's gardens etc. The allotments are at the edge of the village so my daughters are pretty hopeful  Maybe we'll get slow worms in t...

Yes!! An allotment has finally come up

I'm top of the waiting list and a half plot has come up. I haven't seen it yet but apparently the weeds are 4ft tall (and probably full of snakes). Has anyone got any tips or links to step-by-step articles on how to get started? I've been warned about rotivating. I was thinking of sticking a membran...
