Re: Seasons on your patch?

I suppose when you put it like that it isn't that much per head. Interesting stuff.

If I am ever in a pub quiz and the question comes up as to whether cows sweat, I will think of you!

Re: Seville Oranges

Sorry not sure Tony, only one way to find out! I wonder if they graft citrus in the same way as other fruit.

What were you doing with all of those oranges - marmalade?

Re: Screw top wine bottles.

Wax sounds like a good idea Skippy? I haven't got any wisdom to add unfortunately, but I echo your sentiments - we were served water the other night in a bottle with a stopper on a sort of wire hinge - could be re-used hundreds if not thousands of time. My parents were reminiscing about how they use...

Re: Marrow Rum

It's great to see posts from the days of old - I missed this one at the time but am quite tempted to give it a go once the marrows start coming in the summer.

Re: Anyone have experience of pruning Cherry on Colt Rootstock?

Ah brilliant, thanks Tony! Gosh it is upright isn't it - the nursery I bought it from said it had a spread of 4m! That is a relief. And it looks like it is growing happily next to another biggish tree and hedge quite happily? I think it will be fine. I have never had a garden big enough to grow frui...

Re: Anyone have experience of pruning Cherry on Colt Rootstock?

Thanks Tony - maybe yours is a colt too then, as I gather the Pixie don't get beyond 2m. Glad to hear it is upright anyway - will make it easier to net! Think I am just going to be brave and plant it anyway - it is competing with a native hedge and our soil is a bit horrid so with luck it won't get ...

Re: Best floor for greenhouse?

I reckon you'd have a fairly strong case for arguing a greenhouse is an agricultural structure. You'd think so Maggie, but apparently it is horticultural and not agricultural, unless it is on a mahoosive scale, and in that case we would have to get planning permission for it as a structure :angryfi...

Anyone have experience of pruning Cherry on Colt Rootstock?

I have been through a bit of a fruit-tree buying binge and have amongst other things, a half standard Stella cherry on a Colt rootstock. The patch I have in mind for it is about 5m from the centre of the nearest fruit tree (plums) and 3m from my newly planted native hedge. I bought it because I had ...

Re: Best floor for greenhouse?

I would definitely prefer concrete, but our greenhouse is on our 'agricultural' land and therefore in total breach of all planning permission!

So don't want anything too permanent, in case it has to come up one day.

Re: Best floor for greenhouse?

I am having the same issue KF, as soon as I can reclaim the greenhouse from the chickens (we have avian flu restrictions here) I will need to lay a floor. If cost was not an issue, I would go for slabs 2/3 of the way, with a bed for planting. Don't think I would like beds on both sides, as some thin...

Bit of a dream crusher!

Thought I would share this article which I stumbled across today: http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/for-40-years-this-russian-family-was-cut-off-from-all-human-contact-unaware-of-world-war-ii-7354256/ Fascinating story about a family who lived a selfsufficient life in isolation for decades. Not ...

Well I don't begrudge you buying new at all - I would too, so that I benefitted from the warranty. That said, it is scary to think about the mountain of old hardware piling up! If 40million people (not including offices) have a computer and replace it every 8 years, god knows how many landfills wort...

Re: Ducks or Chooks?

Yes the halcyon days of 2010 seem a long time ago...

In terms of noise, I don't remember my ducks being very loud at all. Neither are the chooks - I recon they are about even stevens on that front.
