Re: "Can we talk" about

Of course, the key difference is that in the case of religion, absolutely nobody has any means to establish the "truth", or even whether the entire field of enquiry has any basis at all. The ordinary man in the street may not be able to independently establish the distances to the stars, ...

Re: "Can we talk" about

Rachel, I thought that was a really interesting post! I'm going to say as well: Science is a method for finding stuff out. Yes it is, and I sometimes think the religion/ science dichotomy/ contrived opposition is a false one. We have many other ways of seeing the world: we see it through history, et...

Re: Bumble Bees in the Bathroom

Now,the cat is in the habit of pulling the end panel off the bath in his delusional belief that there are rats under the bath. He's done it so many times I have given up putting it back and it's loose. I am wondering if there is a nest of bees there? What if he's actually found a family of leprecha...

Re: Leprechauns, Fairies and other little people

Andrea Dworkin says fairies are real (not metaphorically real. Historically real). She says it in the first edition of Woman Hating. I am not aware Woman Hating went to a second edition and this may be one of the reasons why, but, obviously, now I like to imagine the Fae dancing round a Faerie Ring ...

Re: "Can we talk" about

There was an article in the Guardian yesterday about a new heathen manifesto : I thought it was interesting because, I must admit, the people who want to tell you in every context How Religion Is Stupid And No Intelligent Person Can Believe In It In Any Way have exactly the same effect on me as peop...

Re: Gay Marriage

The Quakers, the Unitarians, the Wiccans, and a number of liberal synagogues (and probably a few others that I've forgotten) all actively want to be able to marry gay members, and are currently not legally allowed to. I didn't realise this (that there were so many religious groups waiting to be abl...

That wasn't really the point I was making, was it? (And presumably the people who make society better by being beaten up haven't actually been convicted of anything either).

Re: PM has lost it

i think the problem with the youth in question in the UK ( and their familys ) is that they no longer have any fear of athaurity. the police ( and school teachers ) nare no longer allowed to beat the crap out of you and because of this these people dont care if they get arrested and put in jail for...

Re: I may be opening a can of worms here but...

Graye, fwiw I'm a meat eater and I wouldn't think twice about eating veggie for four days, in fact I'd enjoy it - I don't think they'd necessarily feel like you were imposing your lifestyle on them. If you went out to eat once and also cooked fish as well they probably wouldn't even notice. (But yes...

Re: Lace shawl with skulls on it.

Thank you everyone :hugish: It didn't actually take that long - about a month and a bit, which included cocking it up and having to restart. It was fairly complicated but nowhere near as bad as you would think - I just used lots of stitchmarkers! My partner thought it was going to be a blanket made ...

Re: Oh do stop moaning

I've been doing this (not with a bracelet but just trying to notice when I do it), and, I'm truly astonished by how often I moan and about such banal things! O_O. Hopefully it will get less (less moaning, not less banal).

I thought I was reasonably cheery but I seem to be like Kevin the Teenager...
