Re: Bee keeping books
I'm not sure beeking is something I'd want to learn from books, must be better to find a local beekeeper. But hopefully someone will know a book that's good.

Re: seabuckthorn
And very nice it is too.. 900 g sea buckthorn gave 900 ml juice when simmered with just enough water to cover them in the pan. Strained, 900g sugar added and the total yield was 1500 ml of cordial/syrup. Diluted with fizzy water it's a refreshing drink, and it promises to be a tasty syrup over yoghu...

Re: seabuckthorn
How near the coast are you? We used this plant all the time when we put coastal gardens together in West Cornwall(back in the day),because of it's ability to withstand salt winds(not sure about frost resistance though,to be honest). As such it's readily available down there, and pretty cheap,pm me i...

Re: seabuckthorn
Bumping this.. Nipped into Lituanica this afternoon, which is to the typical Eastern European corner shop what T***o is to Arkwrights, and they had bags of frozen sea buckthorn. This is a species I've been wanting to try for a while, but the only patch I know locally is on a nature reserve - and the...

Re: Ersatz
I think there's an important distinction between ersatz and adulteration and bulking out. Roasting acorns for coffee is ersatz, using sawdust to stretch bread for profit is adulteration, substituting sawdust for flour because that's all you've got and a full belly is more comfortable than an empty o...

Re: Ersatz
Check the ingredients list on high-fiber breads, sawdust is added under the name "cellulose". Lots of other foods have it, too. Oh nice , and to think bread is always seen as wholesome. Was it on this site that someone posted a link about E920 (think that's the right number) being used in...

Masters degrees aren't free, even in Scotland. Unless you count the undergraduate MA degrees that Scottish universities offer which are BSc equivilants.

Re: What do I do with screwtop jars?
My best taker used to be a lady who sold homemade jam in a stall at the seaside every year. She definitely is not allowed to use recycled jars anymore, and now has to buy them in at great expense. I did a bit more digging.. your lady with the jam stall should still be able to re-use clean jam jars ...

Re: What do I do with screwtop jars?
There is a problem with recycling at the moment on a national level (possibly EU wide - but I wouldn't put it past the UK to cock-up the system for themselves). For administrative convenience (and perhaps lobbying by some parts of the industry) the recycling permit scheme for glass and plastic pay t...
