Re: It's marmelade time again
Can I just register a vote for lemon marmalade? We cannot get seville oranges either, but I've come to prefer the lemon anyway. I can even provide a link to the recipe I have used with considerable success: http://vendeeblog.net/?p=247 I agree wholeheartedly .... also VERY fond of homemade lemon cu...

Re: It's marmelade time again
I always use the same recipe ... 1lb of fruit, 2lb sugar & 2 pints water. For orange or grapefruit I add one lemon as well. Cut fruit into quarters and remove the flesh (minus pips) Pull off as much pith as you can from the inside of the shells. Put pith and pips in a jelly bag or muslin tied wi...

Year round tomatoes ?
Last year while wandering through the depths of the Internet I came across an article claiming that it is possible to produce tomatoes all the year round at home. The poster was an American and lived in the northern part of the US, not anywhere subtropical. Now I enjoy a challenge and it spurred me ...

Thanks for that, I will go ahead and try to grow them properly this year.
I absolutely love roast, boiled or raw chestnuts and that's what attracted me to them .. no chestnut trees in the west of Ireland

Re: pumpkins/squashes
Possibly it was the damp summer you had in the UK, but then again I grew them successfully in 2007 when we had a wet summer. Can't say it's heat they need either because the last 2 summers here the temp has never gone over 30C and has been very cloudy and each year they grew rather too successfully...

Re: Soap Nuts - tried and tested - and verdicts?
A big plus for soapnuts for some of us is that apparently the soapy water is beneficial to septic tanks, which is more than can be said for some commercially made stuff.

Re: It's marmelade time again
I have to agree with Ann, ordinary oranges make better marmalade than Sevilles, also a lot cheaper ... and you can make it any time of the year, not just January. I make 2 or 3 pots of some form of marmalade every 2 or 3 months and enjoy the ringing the changes. I also make marmalade from Lemons, Gr...

Re: Do/could you live without a credit card? Is this a goal...?
I could live without a credit card, but I don't think I particularly want too. Living in the back of beyond I rely fairly heavily on mail order, and nowadays it's pretty much impossible to order anything without a credit/debit card. If I buy from an Irish company then my debit card is fine, but Lase...
