Re: What are you havesting

September - and this afternoon, by co-incidence! It usually bolts in March, so I get a seed tray going on a windowsill around the end of Feb to replace it. Happily the flavour isn't affected by bolting, it just gets a bit tougher.

Re: Can you over-worm a dog?

Don't worm her more often that recommended, because you're risking damaging her nervous system. The aim of therapy isn't to keep her 100% worm free, but simply to knock the load down every now and again so she isn't full of them.

Re: CATS!

Using chopped holly leaves as a mulch on the paths between the beds works well. Just cut some holly branches, run the mower over them to chop them up, and empty the mower onto the paths. The leaves need to be replaced every other year, but are too spiky for catty toes. WARNING! You need to use a kne...

Re: Steam cleaning redmite

Diatomaceous earth is too messy imho, and the stuff for the chickens neck's is expensive and fairly nasty stuff with a 7 day period where you can't eat the eggs. Much simpler to get hold of a detergent called Poultry Shield and clean the house out with it when you see the little buggers. incidentall...

Re: growing ginger

Grew some in the polytunnel a few years ago but despite lots of leaves it didn't make much of a rhizome, and needed cossetting to make it through the winter - I wouldn't bother again.

Re: What are you havesting

I used to do 'now harvesting' on my blog - it's been a while! From the plot: leeks, spring cabbage, savoy cabbage, kale, brussels, purple sprouting, jerusalem artichokes From the polytunnel: celeriac, overwintered celery, 3 types of lettuce, daikon, giant kohl rabi, lamb's lettuce, beetroot, swiss c...

If you want solar, act fast

Because the government is halving the FIT tariff (subsidy) on all installations that aren't up and working by December 12th. So if you've been thinking about it, now's the time!

Just sayin'! :angryfire:

Re: How do I get rid of a patch of bamboo?

Dug mine out the hard way, by digging a moat round it and getting underneath with a crowbar. Even then some little fragments regrew - I persecuted them and finally won the day. The I learned I could have eaten the buggers :-(

Re: First brews

When there's more than a minute between 'blops' it's time to think about the next step, as a rule. For the beer, that's transferring it to screwtop bottles (in my case). For the wine, that's first racking. Game on!
