Re: Damn those pesky rodents

I had mice and rats attaching my potatoes, carrots, beetroots and turnips crops a couple of month ago, so I know what you are going through. I ended up putting everything in the loft and then found out that the beetroot were molding there!... You just need to keep on with the battle. :icon_s...

Re: Moving

I just looked up Nova Scotia and it seams really nice! I think you will enjoy it there even if it does look like it may be quite populated... I am sure you can still find a nice clear spot away from the masses to look at the sky. :) I wish you the best of luck with the move.

Re: What do you grow that perhaps you shouldn't?

Hi Pete, Well my husband has some bonsai, which are very pretty, but obviously, no good for wood or for food. I suppose he could sell them one day if he wanted to and probably make a bit of money out of them, but he may have to wait a fair few years for that as they are still young trees and only th...

Re: SHIT!

I wonder if the builders/plumbers around our part of the world are not over cautious with the 80 cm depth to avoid freezing pipes. But I suppose nobody will try to risk putting pipes at even 70 or 60 cm just in case... I will study the fosse tout eau and see what we can do. However, hubby has found ...

Re: SHIT!

Hi Marshlander and Riff-Raff and thank you for your answers. Based on the depth of the trench we had to dig to get the water from our borehole to the house, it is possible to get a very serious frost in our part of France as deep as 80 cm. But digging our reed bed deeper than 60 cm as far as hubby i...

Re: SHIT!

Having hunted high and low, I decided to ask my question here about reed beds. We are about to get started on building ours for grey water and I have some doubt about the sizes of the gravels to be used as well as the depts we need to dig as we face possible -20 C in winter, so I wonder if anybody h...

Re: Hello from france

It is because of all these horrific ways of dispatching animals that some people prefer to do it themselves more humanly, not like heartless machines. Saying that there are people out there who enjoy the horrible jobs they do in those enormous abattoirs. I have only killed one old hen myself. The tr...

Re: Hello from france

Hello Crepesuzette and welcome to this lovely forum where I haven't been myself for quite a while... I so know what you mean about the cold house in France. I was a French expat living in the UK (lived there 20 years), since early this year, when I came back home, so to say, with hubby in tow. All t...

Re: (Very) Down in the Dumps

Well I have stopped being upset about my poor potatoes. Nothing is stopping the disease, so I have cut most plants right to the ground and will start pulling my crop very soon... My only issue, they were only planted in May, so I am not expecting to eat many chips this year... maybe more salad type ...

Re: jets and the jetstream

But who knows what will happen next... If the weather is changeable, you could have a super wet year followed by a super hot-dry one... There is no predicting anymore, that is the problem. Quarante jours depuis la fête de St. Medard le 19 juillet - ça fera beau, 27°, je vous jure  Peut-etr...
