Re: I finally got an electric bike!

Keith,
Do you have a link to your particular model? I'm curious how the bike looks with motor and battery. Now you can get one of those low priced solar panels for charging a 12V battery...that would make it even cooler.

Chuck

Re: Inspect your broccoli carefully, before eating...I didn'

I can cope with the black specks in my elderflower cordial but Chuck  how could you continue to eat that salad? Our lettuce, spinach and radishes are so delicious that I had to keep eating. I battled the yuck factor by using my hand to grab 'supposedly' completed compost...only to find reall...

Inspect your broccoli carefully, before eating...I didn't =)

Last night for dinner, I gathered three types of lettuce, onions, radishes and broccoli. I brought them inside, rinsed them and put them into a large salad bowl. I added a nice low cal Basalmic dressing. I started my favorite TV program and began to eat. After several delicious bites I looked down. ...

Re: Backyard Aquaculture (fish farming)

how are your plants doing? This was a lesson learned. They stopped growing. The bed is in the garage so a couple of plant fluorescents and some outside light were insufficent as light sources. Our new rig will have 4 pairs of plant lamps and is placed next to the window with a southern exposure. Ho...

Won't the diatomaceous earth affect ALL insects?

Don't know! I'll check it out.

Re: Beer and slugs

Graham, I like the tile idea. If I'm going to get these little buggers drunk I should, being responsible, give them a place to sleep it off. Update Last night we went outside around 11pm and collected about 15 slugs that were hanging around the local pub. Some were pretty large. I had ...

Re: Growing larger strawberries??

Thanks to both of your for your thorough responses. I hadn't thought about putting some runners into pots until they are established, and then snipping the runner.

Again, I'll share this with Grace.

Thanks,
Chuck

Re: Fruits of our labor

Odsox, We hope to be more self-sufficient like you one day. We've a large tree in the front yard that casts a large shadow during the day on a sizeable portion of our lawn. We're seriously thinking about taking it down to make room for several small fruit trees. Prices at the store are insane. With ...

Re: Organic assault!!

MKG,
Interesting point. We have a toad on patrol in our garage at night snacking on tiny insects. I haven't considered frogs. There are hundreds of them nearby in the creek and swampy areas.

I'll research frog habitats.

Chuck

Re: Growing larger strawberries??

hedgewizard,
Thanks for distinguishing between the small and larger berries. Our goal was to eventually make some jelly. So we're doing the right thing. Of course it would be nice to have some larger berries that are also sweet. I'll share this with Grace.

Re: Beer and slugs

Update Grace set out 8 more slug traps yesterday afternoon. About 2 hours after sunset we went to the garden with a flashlight and found about 15 slugs (large and small ones) creeping up on the beer. We left them alone to see what would happen. This morning, only 1 slug had drowned in his beer. The...

Re: weeds, compost and the odds

Hi Dave, Last year we added lawn fabric to act as a mulch. It did an excellent job at keeping the weeds at bay. The drawback was that it was a hassle adding compost and fertilizer. This year no lawn fabric, and we are pulling grass weeds daily. Because my neighbors now send me all of their lawn clip...

Hi,
I found surfing youtube aquaculture and aquaponics to be very inspirational. It allowed me to ask lots of additional questions.

Re: Growing larger strawberries??

Hi, We planted these plants late last spring (2010). Picked only a couple of berries. The strawberry patch spread through all the runners. Variety? I need to dig that up. We bought these strawberry plants (10 to a pack) on discount at one of these large home and garden centers. They come from India....

Re: Our spring garden - photos

It's been 18 days since I posted these pics. We've enjoyed a good balance of rain and sun shine. Here are three more pics. The growth rate has been absolutely amazing. http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee405/ourphotos1988/garden_4_11a.jpg http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee405/ourphotos1988/gar...
