Maybe you can tell something about a person by the extensions they have on Firefox. I have to say that Adblock was about the first extension I installed several years ago. When you lot were grumbling about the GoogleAds a while back I was a bit puzzled, because I didn't even know the site carried th...

It's difficult to think of how to do a good job on this that doesn't involve accessing the back of the cavity in some way - in other words taking off the existing plasterboard. If you can get into the triangular crawl space it would help, and you may be able to see better how to tackle the job bette...

Well, I wouldn't want you to get the idea that I know anything about electronics (or indeed anything else), but from what I think I do know, a sine wave is A Good Thing, and a square wave is A Bad Thing - for some applications, more so than for others. But as you say, for this type of application, a...

It's 'cos you are not actually linking to the photo; your link is to a page which contains the photo, and so isn't actually an image in its own right. The photo itself has the url of http://lh5.google.com/donna....

Annpan - I'm not quite sure I follow where you need the insulation to go. Is it in the gap between the sloping ceiling and the sarking, or is it the triangular space behind a vertical wall with roof space behind it? Or have I missed the point entirely? Can you access the space, or is it hidden behin...

Here in the UK we are going through the painful process of dismantling our first generation of nuclear power stations. The time scales and costs are astounding - most will take around 25 - 40 years to decommission, though for some types of power station the estimate is over 100 years (but this is no...

The fisherman, the golf course, and Donald 'The Fart' Trump

I've been hearing about this on the news during the day. Just who the feck does Donald Trump think he is? This would seem to be the epitome of someone with too much money throwing his weight around and assuming he can make people do what he wants because he's offering them money. Has he thought, may...

Sorry, to clarify my reservations are about the straw bale houses durability Ah, well, in that case... I've helped on half a dozen strawbale builds in the past couple of years, so I reckon I can comment about these too. I suppose it all depends upon what you mean by 'durable'. One of the big advant...

earthship, cob, rammed earth/adobe or earthbag. while some people may have good results from them i have reservations about their durability. Earth building has a history going back thousands of years - in fact probably to the time that man first became a builder. There are many examples of cob and...

For splitting you won't do better that a decent maul, which is designed to split logs along the grain; it cleaves them better and is less likely to get jammed than a thinner bladed cutting or felling axe. These are better for cutting across the grain, though they will work for splitting if it's all ...

It's possible -ish! Was it this forum where someone brought up the subject of generating electricity with a shoe which harnessed the energy lost when you walk? I seem to remember someone had invented a shoe which recharged a mobile phone. Maybe it was another forum; can't remember. The back of my fa...

Re: Canabalising old computers

Anyone want to jump in an tell me that i missed some lovely magnets in the hard drive (a vague rumor in the back of my mind) I'm afraid you did. HDDs have extremely powerful 'rare earth' magnets in them. I've read stuff on the web about people making generators using the magnets out of disk drives....

Seriously though, 3p on a litre won't make people stop and think in great numbers Maybe not (though, for example, the creeping quarter percent on interest rates did have an effect eventually). But if petrol doesn't go up then it's just getting cheaper, and I can see no justification for that. and I...

...would it be likely that we could connect our existing tank to the new stove and boiler? From this distance, I don't see why not, though obviously it's hard to be definitive over a forum. I'm assuming that there was some sort of boiler heating it before now, and so the new stove will simply repla...
