Re: Has Spring sprung?

Sheesh KL May is well into our growing season here. Start mid March and with any luck run through to late sowings of cash crops start of October.

Re: Has Spring sprung?

The lifeboat station at Amble posted an interesting video of the sea at their station. To think we lived about one minute from there and the oldest girl worked at the chip shop next door while she was at college.

This isn't spring yet.

Re: Has Spring sprung?

We have icing sugar snow rather thick and lying with a wicked east north east wind adding a chill factor of -8 or thereabouts today. Underneath the soil is sodden from previous heavy rain and snow. KL I think that we both have the remnants of winter hanging on. Planting may well be April outside.

Re: Mints

I have an old cold frame type construction made of wood that was used for storage as the previous tenant on the allotment didn't have/couldn't afford a shed. It's been filled with home made compost over the years and now contains peppermint, chocolate mint, apple mint, Moroccan mint, an odd variegat...

They must be popular around here - none of the garden centres stock them.

Running out of sand

And another

And a third on how we are

Interesting thought - keep all your plastic containers and such as they could be come valuable.

Re: Has Spring sprung?

It's a case of anything planted outside at the moment needs to be aquatic. My spuds can't swim. My winter onions drowned and I have to start again.

Re: Has Spring sprung?

There was a definite frost this morning. But also gentle breezes and warm sunshine the rest of the day so far. Of course, just as you are hoping for the ground to dry out the forecast for tomorrow is ... very wet.

Re: Banish Plastic

I believe that there is a lot of emphasis put on us, the end consumer, with regards to butting down on plastic and not enough on the supply chain. On the other hand, I have a lot of plastic food containers which have lasted me for at least eight years and are still going strong. They came inexpensiv...

Re: Weather forecast

Cheer up they did a red one for Storm Desmond in 2015 - we know about him as they had inshore lifeboats up the main street of the county town of Northumberland rescuing people from the floods when the river got out there. It was equally interesting here but I live just far enough from the river to n...

Re: Weather forecast

Anyone who's short can have some of our plenty up here in Northumberland. It's close the schools weather as buses and pupils all seem to be stranded in the garage/at home.

Re: Weather forecast

I dare say that none of the weather forecasts will suit as there's snow in the south east of the UK.

Re: Wheelbarrow tyre containers

I have some car tyres with flowers in but wouldn't use them for food growing. I also think as does Green Aura that wheelbarrow tyres are too small to be really useful as they won't be deep enough for root growth or wide enough for plants to spread.

If you click this link, scroll down and click on the growing advice tab you'll find everything I know about these pumpkins. And March is much too early to sow, end of April soon enough. Indoors or greenhouse to start.
