Re: 101 cold and flu remedies

At the first sign, garlic. Ideally raw .... in general, garlic which you mince, then wait 5 minutes, then put it in some food which you don't cook too long. If you're allergic to garlic (my husband is, gives him a headache etc) use onion, but keep that 10 mins after cutting before you cook it. See h...

Re: 101 natural health and medicinal remedies

A hankie with some drops of lavender oil to help me sleep - I tuck it under my nose in bed. Or a little bag with dried hop flowers. Or (beware veggies) eating pork trotters! It's the gelatin in them that helps insomniacs. I also read that drinking water with a bit of vinegar and honey helps, but I c...

Re: 101 chemical free ideas for the home

I used to use white vinegar for all sorts like so many other selfsufficientishies - and now I use all my overly sour kombucha for white vinegar. And to make a nice drink (honey + sour kombucha + bit of ginger).

Re: What are we all having for dinner?

Fried (yesterdays leftover) potatoes; nice homegrown cabbage; and a piece of pheasant which I cooked and froze some days ago. Right now we get pheasants every week from a shoot across the road - yum!

Re: Yoghurt

I always make 4 pints at a time, about once a week if that. I boil the milk, put it in a bowl, let it cool down till my finger does not get burned (which is, apparently, 46.5°), stir in a few spoonfuls of the old yoghurt, cover and wrap it in 2 coats. Then I put half in the fridge and the other half...

Re: Red and brown onions

Yes the red ones are sweeter, personally I much prefer them. It also appears they are better for you, I quote: "Red onions have a higher concentration of flavonoids in the outer layers, which, according to a Cornell study, can help reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Red oni...

Re: Ish Members' Websites

So do you have to have 25 postings to go on here with your blog, or does the minimum amount only hold for mentioning your blog elsewhere in the forum? If so, my blog is http://thoughtforfood-aw.blogspot.com. If not, I'll keep mum :silent:

Re: New to apple trees

My experience with apple trees, and pears and walnuts for that matter, is that the main thing is to give it plenty of compost every year. In that case you don't even have to keep the grass way from it. Lots of good food and you have very few troubles. xA

November salads

My November: I go out and pick a few leaves of red looseleaf salad from their hidey holes in the slugcollars. Plus some Moroccan cress, more like a lettuce really. They have all stood the colder weather very well and I don't think the slug collars are really necessary as slugs aren't keen on red. I ...

Keeping cats off your beds

We made a largeish bed just for them. As long as we keep it nicely raked, they won't go anywhere else.

Thought for Food

Each month I publish a webpage called Thought for Food, with info for local/seasonal growing, eating, recipes and some nutrition suggestions. The growing and eating aspect of it it is aimed at Somerset, though most of it holds for all of the UK; the nutrition ideas are for everyone! You'll find it h...
