Re: Being self sufficient in 2017

We could sit down and write a To Do list and pin it somewhere that we can't see then?

Re: Being self sufficient in 2017

I've just had another look at Wombat's list and would you believe he has crossed off some items since he posted it at the end of October. His last update is 18th December so something must be happening.

Re: Unwanted presents?!

Oh Ina, not the best eh? Trouble is that there's this thing about older people not being able to shop for themselves especially if they are on a low income so you need to ensure they have food and something a bit better at Christmas. That sort of trickles down to singles living on their own especial...

Re: Cleaning products

Some observations I would make on pound shops in general: 1. They sell what often turn out to be smaller sizes compared with supermarkets which is one to watch 2. They often sell lines which have not done well elsewhere 3. People who like Daz love the Power Daz - if it's cheap enough in the pound sh...

Re: Gardening Indoors

Seems a sensible idea - have space, need food eh?

I have just started the second lot of chives on the warm light window sill so that come spring outside they will be ready to be potted on up the allotments.

Re: No Bees?

Even with a flowering programme on the allotment of bee friendly plants, bees are not as common as they were when I first started.

Re: Compost worms

Oh my Weedo that's quite some quantity to try and get your soil up to scratch. Is the cost worth the end results is the question? It's taken some 10 years to get the soil on number 1 allotment to a really wormful condition. Number 2 plot wouldn't know a worm if it saw one and only seems to have some...

Re: December planting

Probably if it's outside but if you have window ledge space, some pots and soil indoors where it's warm and light you can grow a lot of herbs like chives and basil, spring onions worth a try and even lettuce.

Re: December planting

Hi sususanan, I think that the answer to your question is probably not a lot looking at the weather. It's a bit too cold for things like seeds. You might get some late winter onion sets and garlic sets in the ground as both need the cold to get them growing if you want to do vegetables. If you have ...

Re: Vertical gardening

Runner beans grow up. Try http://www.realseeds.co.uk/peas.html for Telephone Peas which are climbers and I've heard good words of those. You can try French beans, climbing varieties – try ‘Cherokee trail of tears’ also from Real Seeds which I've heard good words about. You could also do a search thr...

Long gone are the days when I want to fiddle with computer operating systems. So long as it works when I switch it on ....
